Searching for Newton alternative
I’m very picky about email apps and Newton has spoiled me for the past three years. When they told us they’re closing shop, I went through more than a dozen third party email apps to find one that suits my preferences. I am a firm believer that premium features are worth paying for if done it’s done right.
Canary, though relatively new, has a lot of key features all email apps should have: color coded email by account, email tracking, and EXCELLENT tech support just to name a few.
Though not quite up to Newton standards, this app seems promising and I look forward to future features and releases. There are small nuisances like the inability to sort accounts after you create them, and the ability to pick notification sounds but these are trivial next to the functionality and the security provided by Canary. It’s also a bit slower to load emails than Newton. But for now, it seems I will stick by Canary and see what it becomes!
Thank you for fixing the iPhone issue when trying to select/delete multiple emails at once!
Besides that particular (albeit annoying) issue, I've had no problems and a great experience using Canary as my primary email client on both my iPhone & my Mac. I used to just use the default "Mail app" that comes with Apple products, but wanted something slightly more robust with additional features. I also didn't want to have to pay an arm and a leg, especially with a subscription, so after researching all the different email clients that were available for both iOS & Mac (so that they would sync seamlessly), I decided on Canary and I'm happy I chose it. Like I said, I did get a little frustrated with the iPhone app when it wouldn't allow me to select multiple emails at a time, which I do almost daily because I delete many of the emails I receive without even looking at them (lol), but now that seems to be fixed and the app works perfectly otherwise, and the Mac/desktop version has given me no problems whatsoever! Overall, if you're looking for a more "premium" email client that you can sync with iCloud to both your iOS and Mac devices, I think you'll be very pleased with Canary! Thank you so much, developers, for creating this great app & for promptly fixing the issue I talked about above! I very much appreciate it!!! 😊😊😊
Overall pretty good but definitely flawed
I really like the canary app as a whole but there are a couple things that will likely prevent me from purchasing it when my trial runs out. I was planning on it after the first couple days but more time has shown some weird stuff.
1) the app doesn’t allow for the downloading of remote images on a per email. Every email app I have ever tried has allowed you to turn off loading remote images for privacy/security and then in each email you can hit a button to download them. This is a great solution as some emails you need the pictures but want it off by default. Canary makes it an all or nothing thing. Never seen it done this way and there’s a reason for that.
2) the app seems to render emails weirdly or just improperly. Multiple emails seemed to get cut off randomly and at first I thought it was just the email but it kept happening. I went and checked the same emails in spark and the Apple Mail app, both of which render the entire email.
3) the unsubscribe feature is awesome. Apple’s implementation in their app is not good as it just sends an email requesting to be unsubscribed which doesn’t always work. Canary’s is great but sometimes it doesn’t work and just opens the website that sent the newsletter. It’s not a problem with the unsubscribe link as if you click on that directly it works. Not sure what’s going on there.
