Version 3.3.8

In 3.3.8, we've fixed a number of issues related to contacting 3rd party data providers which caused reps not to show for many users. These problems have been addressed allowing you to once again put your passion to action by being heard.

The murder of George Floyd on May 25th at the hands of the Minneapolis police department has sparked a wave of protests across the nation calling for racial justice and renewed scrutiny of policing tactics and the systemic issues in the criminal justice system. It is times like these that we must all ask ourselves tough questions about whether we are living the values we claim to believe in and seek to better ourselves - and our country - when we find we are coming up short.

What many have assumed about Capitol Call is that it is the product of a well-funded liberal political operation - but this is in fact not the case. This is a personal passion project of a single individual. And as an expectant father and small business owner, there are times that my personal and professional commitments pull me away for longer than I anticipate or hope. Unfortunately, as I worked to secure my business during the Covid-19 pandemic, it meant that Capitol Call was not receiving proper maintenance, upgrades, or community engagement.

However as I was asking myself those tough questions above about whether I was doing enough to support my fellow citizens of color - I was reminded that supporting Capitol Call is one of the things I can do. This is my small part – to use my talents to provide a platform for the voices that have not been heard. And then to listen. And really hear – even when it's uncomfortable. As someone who has never had the experience of being Black in America – I have the privilege that the color of my skin has not dictated the struggles I face. I cannot fully appreciate the frequent (justifiable) anger, sorrow, or fear that many people of color face in this country and so I ask that if this tool can be of service to you in voicing your experience – please use it – and know that behind you and beside you, you have me, and many others, that can say without equivocation that #BlackLivesMatter.

Interesting and informative

The app takes 30sec of googling out of your life. Instead of doing a little investigative research the app puts the phone numbers of your states representatives right on there app for you, how nifty is that? Not to mention it even tells you how to argue your opinion and what to say. However, take caution; as you begin to read the call to actions you start to fill the “left” or “liberal” biased, no big deal right? Sure if you like communism. Lol, JK... but seriously. Any way, as a consumer I would say question where the materials are coming from no matter what your beliefs are. Hope my review comes as a light hearted and half helpful review.

Developer Response ,

@josh8489 Thanks for the light hearted thoughts.

To your point about bias - yes the campaigns can be liberal bias. But they can also be conservative bias. We tried harder in this version of the app to indicate that these are community contributions written by users - not by us (unless we are actually sponsoring the item - like the State of the Union campaign present today) - as such they reflect the views of their authors.

Capitol Call is an open platform and we hope to encourage contributors of all political leanings to take part.

Thank you for offering an awesome app that allows people to find their representatives information easily and readily contact them. I would like to suggest to look into utilizing the Sunlight Foundations’ data to possibly incorporate their voting history and campaign finances into a similar app? I always wanted an app like this to be available to people and now I guess I found it. Thanks again!

PS. I wish I could also suggest links/information that is missing from certain officials pages like their social media accounts and websites.

PPS - I’m a pretty conservative person and can realize that a community driven app like this is simply going to reflect the interests of those who choose to contribute. The most helpful part of this app is simply the geolocation god representatives and contact info presented in a simple way.

Developer Response ,

@justinapeterswv Thanks for all the great suggestions. Beyond working to build more diversity in our community - we're also collecting all the feature requests for our next round of development. I've looked at the Sunlight Foundation data in the past and agree - that would be great to incorporate as well. And please recommend Capitol Call to additional Advocacy organizations you think could make use of it to spread their message - a more diverse set of viewpoints will only add value to the platform.

Not ready for prime time

I downloaded this app today and at first was impressed with the way it was setup. I quickly lost interest when simple functionality such as looking at representative information caused the app to grind to a screeching halt when you scroll down close to related news. It continued to spin while looking for news and wouldn’t let you go back or cancel it in any way other than to quit the app. I tried many different representatives and had the same result. This wasn’t a matter of waiting long enough for it to finish looking for the info. After 10 minutes(!), it was still searching when I gave up and closed the app. It simply shouldn’t take that long plus you should be permitted to cancel the search or at least go back a level.

Once the developer fixes this, I’ll reevaluate the app. Until they get a handle on it, I hope they’ll consider disabling this feature.

A quick update: we've just released a fix that puts the request for related rep news to the background. So, while we can't necessarily control performance from our news provider, we can at least make it so it doesn't lock up the UI on you. Thanks for bringing this to our attention so we can ensure the best app experience for all our users.

@bexn01 - sorry that was your experience - I certainly can appreciate how that was frustrating but thanks for bringing this to our attention so we can do something to address it.

The lawmaker "related news" is a relatively new feature and while we've tested it to work under normal operations - it is certainly possible that due to the massive surge in new downloads yesterday as a result of the feature on the AppStore, that this area was experience scaling issues. We use a 3rd party service for providing that news feed - and while we've never heard of performance issues with our connection to them - we also could have hit some sort of limit we weren't aware of.

Rest assured - we will look in to this. Also, I suspect that if you pull open the app today or tomorrow, you shouldn't notice this issue as our usage is no longer at its peak.
