Great idea, unfortunately unreliable back end

I have used Cargaroo three times. The idea is great, the bikes themselves are good for the job. Unfortunately, I have had two problems trying to just ride bikes and pay for them.

I reserved a bike today. I paid 1€ to reserve it for 20 minutes. That itself seems unfair given that bikes can only be parked in dedicated locations - I’m supposed to pay just to be sure a bike that I’m told by the app is there is still there when I get there?

I got to the bike. I unlocked the bike with the app to begin my ride. Bike does not actually unlock. I cannot move the lock in any way.

I tried to tell the app to lock it again, hoping to reset. I try multiple times. App tells me that the bike failed to lock each time.

App then says, “have a problem? Call us,” with a button to call. I call.

Number is not in service.

I go back to the app again, try again. Number really is out of service.

Now, I am running late. So I call a taxi - a slower method given traffic but one that will at least take me where I need to go. I wait for the taxi, pay for the taxi, arrive late.

I know the cab, I go back to the app once more, look around, find an option to chat or go WhatsApp. So into chat.

The person I talked to tells me the bike is unlocked. I say it is not, please send a tech and just cancel the order.

They do, I’m glad that was painless at least.

I also tell them of my problems contacting them. “We are not offering phone service at this point.” A questionable choice, but if that is what Cargaroo wants to do, then they should remove phone as the primary means of contact from the app.

2. A few days ago, I get an email. My account t is frozen. My payment information is not up to date. I owe 20€ for my last ride. I need to go to a dedicated link.

Link takes me to an error message.

I reply, and explaining this. I get a new link. I can pay by a range of methods. I choose credit card.

Clicking on it, I see an error message, but am then redirected to a cc page. I put in my credit card details, and am taken to a page to enter a pin. No pin ever arrives. I try again. No pin.

So I go back, click on bank transfer. It takes me to the page to enter my credit card details.

I could in the end because I tried a different card that didn’t require a 2FA pin sent to my phone to work.

This is why merchants use services like Klarna and PayPal, but even if Cargaroo wants to keep it in-house, surely there are more reliable services they could incorporate instead of trying this version connected to their own error-filled system?

Return requirement does not make sense

I was carrying a heavy Parcel 20 minutes from my home when I came across one of these bikes. I thought “nice, a rental bike that will fit my parcel” – but then I realized I would have to drive it home, the all the way back to where I found it, and then walk back to my home in order to use the service.

This model does not make sense. It’s not how I want to use rental bikes.

Easy, fun, got the job done

I use Cargoroo for errands, shopping, and getting heaving things around town - or a Saturday at the park.

The app works like it should, and the bikes are fun and easy to learn.
