I enjoy playing this app. Sometimes when I’m playing a computer game, I feel like sevens are rolled more than they would in real life. If a game is going poorly for me, I exit out and start a new one. I wish I didn’t have to do that sometimes. But I don’t like playing against strangers through the Internet, so this is fun to play by myself.
I have no major issues with the game as is, but about twice a week the app sends an annoying terms of service style notification, which as to be acknowledged. That is a minor nuisance, but it then resets all my settings, primarily the sound being off for the terrible music and sound effects. I have to reset them and it can be jarring to have sound when you have chosen silence, for instance on a quiet night flight when others are sleeping. This can be easily solved by providing me with a private jet. 🤪
For those who are familiar with the original game of Catan will love playing this. I’ve never had an issue with it crashing. It’s fun to play anytime and can easily save and come back to play the same game. With the $5 purchase you can play the classic, seafarers, or one other expansion pack (can’t remember which one it is). My only complaint is the AI/Computer player rarely trades with me at any point along the game. And if I draw a sought after card they will incessantly ask to trade for it. Otherwise, it’s a fantastic rendition of a great game!
I really enjoy this game, it’s a lot of fun. I have played many hours on this. However, it often seems like the dice will be rigged against you. For example, I was playing against 3 bots and the only hex I wasn’t on was 5. I counted, and it was rolled 7 times out 9 rolls, and cost me the game at the end. It’s not the first time I’ve had this issue either, and it’s very frustrating.
This app feels clunky and I was pretty confused about the pace of turns. In the Xbox console version, it is very clear when it is your turn, the order of operations of your turn, and the console version has a button that states “end your turn”. I had fun with the console version but got the mobile app so I could play with my mom since she doesn’t have an Xbox. It was just overall a bad experience and it felt inconsistent in regard to what determines the end of your turn. Also, the login/create an account screen is buggy and lacks some type of feedback to let you know it’s functioning. The add-a-friend page in the online custom match area of the app is also in German and I could not figure out how to change it to English.Overall, I would certainly recommend the Xbox console version of Catan. It’s very easy to learn and understand and it flows well. This app… is confusing an I actually apologized to my mom for convincing us to both spend $5 to play together. Refund please?
I've had Catan on my iPhone 4 for about a year now, and the more I play it, the more I want to play it (I think that's called *addiction*!). At first it was kind of frustrating because the AI players will gang up on you if you're ahead...but don't real people do that too?? The settings were causing some frustration, but I've tweaked them to my liking and the game functions just right now. I had to change the difficulty to 'easy' for a while to get the feel of how each AI player functions, then increased the difficulty after lots of practice (and several consecutive declarations of 'You are Lord of Catan!). At first it was really hard to see the tiny graphics on the iPhone 4's tiny screen, but once you know what everything is, it doesn't matter...you know the little flying green circle means you just collected some wood. The flying yellow circle means Mary Ann just traded wheat with Vincent. I have not purchased additional expansions or tried the online version yet. I figure that like any new app product, it will have problems that the developers will smooth out over time. That's to be expected, and no reason for all those other reviewers to be hating on the app so much. My one complaint is that it really eats up the battery. This really is an outstanding app, especially considering that it has been adapted from a moderately complex board game. It's challenging and it's great on-the-go entertainment.
