Please Note:
1) Currently, as per government norms, foreign nationals from countries on the FATF list and FATF grey list are not permitted to use the app.
2) Due to regulations, Cheq app can only be used while you're within Indian borders. Our servers detect your current location and restrict transactions being initiated from outside Indian borders.
3) You need to complete the in-person verification process by either visiting our partner branches or booking an agent.
4). Documents required are
Foreign nationals (Passport, a valid Indian Visa)
OCIs (Passport, OCI card)
NRIs (Passport, valid foreign country ID)
5) Payments can only be made to registered merchants. Individual (P2P) payments are not permitted

Works well when it works

App downloaded and set up easily.
It requires in person ID verification. They sent some one to my home (Mr. Jazz) to complete that and it was very smooth.
The app does not work for person to person transactions. Since some small businesses use a personal UPI id, it works best for larger businesses.
The app also crashes when you try to copy your own upi id from the screen and it also crashes with some QR scans.
The company is responsive and said they are working on remediating these issues.

Not perfect, but there is no one else trying

It works for me about 92% of the time, which is awesome. There are some issues occasionally, but I see Indians have issues sometimes too with UPI, so I can’t blame that on the app. I’m a long term tourist and having access to UPI is good. Cheq made the sign up easy for me, and the initial sign up cost was totally worth it. When I buy things from businesses, I don’t have to worry whether they will accept international credit cards or not, and I also don’t have to default to cash.

Okay for short-term stays, not good for long-term.

The pro is that you can pay using UPI, the bad part is that it only works for larger businesses and not individuals or businesses using personal accounts. I’ve had some luck using it in the rickshaw, but today I tried using it and it wouldn’t pay the person since he was using an personal UPI. I ended up stuck, out of cash, and had to phone multiple local friends to help me pay the fare.

The exchange fee was also a bummer. Had I known there were exchange fees and payment limitations, I would have just registered for a local UPI.
