Thank you for putting together a BEAUTIFUL opening app. I can't image anything better." -- by FraudAlert

"Excellent...NONE BETTER - *****

I love this app! It's fast, beautiful, and comprehensive. Makes it very easy to practice and learn all the most common (and rare) openings. The author is active on improvements, and takes user recommendations to heart. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!" -- by ECHOOooo

"Great opening tool - *****

There are very few apps that I will take the time to review. However, this is one app that I use every day. It sharpens my opening knowledge Nd would be worth far more than the price at which I purchased it. Kudos."

"Awesome - *****

Easy to use. Easy to follow. Great for those indisposed multitasking opportunities... Strong work fellas!"

Excellent tool for chess learning

I use this app all the time and it delivers what it promises. If you are serious about chess, you will get your money’s worth in the paid version.

One thing that would make for a better user experience would be some sort of buttons or gesture controls to parse through moves. (The SmallFish iOS app does this well—perhaps something similar to their setup would be doable.) It’s a little annoying to have to tap the tiny moves in the annotation bar under the board to advance through a line.

My only real complaint is that positions that are reached with multiple move orders do not always show the same results. I recently noticed this while looking through a Sicilian line: if you enter 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 Nxd4 4.Nxd4 cxd4 5.Qxd4, there is no data for the position, whereas the more common 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nxd4 5.Qxd4, with the pawn taking first and the knight taking second, displays several suggestions from the app’s database even though they transpose to the same position. I’m not sure if this is an intended feature, but it would be most helpful if this were not the case. It makes me wonder what other results aren’t showing up in positions that are commonly reached through several different move orders.

I hope you still intend to upgrade the design…

This is a very good app for learning chess openings. There is a very wide selection of variations also.

Mr. Ashmore, Kudos for your passion, love for chess AND for making this app. I’ve been very critical of this app in the past, but now you’ve made it a VERY GOOD preliminary openings book app, and a very good-looking one, too. I just didn’t want to be harsh critic, and then never come back to praise you when you did finally do well. I know my time away must have made you think I was only interested criticizing you. Being that there hasn’t, been an update since January Twenty-16, and since the chess tournament world is a world that requires updates to moves in a particular place in particular lines, I can’t imagine the chess world is completely satisfied with this app, but I realize that you, alone, can’t possibly keep the latest analyses of all the popular openings up to date, and do it constantly at that.
Nevertheless, considering the way I’ve seen chess players go crazy in openings analyses over many years, this app should be on every player’s iPhone & iPad.
I thank you on behalf of the tournament chess players of the world..

Even Great for Beginners

I'm far from at the point where I need to memorize even a handful of openings, and even I can benefit from this amazing tool. It's perfect for analysis, and for getting the hang of even the first three moves to see where you can develop from there. I'm sure as I progress, this will become ever more useful, but I'm already getting a lot out of Openings.

If I had one gripe about this app, it's missing support for landscape mode. Not only would that make it less annoying, it would allow the developer to use the screen more efficiently.
