Description

A new way to play the world's oldest game

Love chess but tired of memorising openings? Our competitive online play is focused on thinking fast not learning patterns. Challenge yourself to overcome opponents in a randomly selected Chess Remix. The games all use the standard chess pieces with alternate rules. Can you think quickly and find new ways to win?

The whole world's Chess in one place

Chess Remix contains Chess games from around the world. You can try Shogi (Japanese Chess), Xiangqui (Chinese Chess), Janggi (Korean Chess), Makruk (Thai Chess) and more. These games have all been styled to look like the Chess you are used to, making it easier to learn for beginners.

A journey through the history of Chess

Travel back to where it all began, 6th century India, and try Chaturanga, the original Chess. See the games it developed into as it spread across the globe. Play Courier Chess like a 12th century European or test your skills at Tamerlane Chess.

Delve into ancient Shogi and experience the progression through different eras of Japanese history. Enjoy a marathon game of the massive Dai Shogi or a quick game of Mini-Shogi.

You can even play Hnefatafl, the Chess of the Vikings.

Chess 2.0

Chess Remix lets you change the rules and make your own game. Will you invent the next Chess?

It's your game play by your rules. You could win by losing the game,
start in random places or just have En Passant be a forced move. Don't like casting? You can turn it off. Want a Rook that also moves like a Knight? You got it. There are limitless possibilities (okay technically there is a limit, but there are so many options you could never play all of them).

Not just Chess

We have so many options to customise your Chess game you can even play Checkers. The app comes pre loaded with a variety of Checkers games from around the world and some ancient versions of the game. You can even play some other abstract board games like Three Men's Morris or even Tic-Tac-Toe.

Become more than a Chess Master

A standard Chess game has 6 pieces. Chess Remix starts with more than 100. To help you learn them we have hand designed levels to help you understand and use every piece in Chess history and the new rules you might encounter.

Unleash your creativity

Chastity's Chess Review: Chess Remix

Strengths

It offers standard Chess but also the largest list of variants of any game on Steam, including Chess960, Crazyhouse, Atomic, Absorption, Elimination, Capture the Leader, Losing Chess, Three Check Chess, Pocket Knights, Shatar, No Check Chess, En Passant is forced, and the ability to create customized rules of each of these.

Also included are the 3 main Asian variants: Shogi, Xiangqi, and Janggi.
Historical Chess games and other non-chess games like Tic-Tac-Toe and Checkers

It offers a customizable theme appearance for backgrounds and pieces.

Weaknesses

Not all features are fully implemented, such as the "levels section". This will probably be fixed in future updates.

The artificial intelligence is rather weak and may be okay for people who don't play very well but disappointing to skilled chess players. This AI can be improved using fairy stockfish if the developer wishes.

Conclusion

This game is worth the price if you are a hard core chess player or play other board games involving strategy. It's also for the creative types who want to make their own rules and create board games and test them with AI.

I will update this review as needed when future updates are made.

Evelyn Brigham ,

Amazing! But I have a suggestion for a new feature…

This app is amazing! But I wish there were more features, like in the piece creator, I wish we could make our own multi-step pieces, like how you made the Lion from Chu Shogi! I am basically saying I wish there was an option to make a created path of a piece you created multi step. That means they do NOT have to stop when they capture.

Excellent! But could be better

I like to make chess variants that alter the rules in ways that are not possible here, but it’s as good as I could expect from an app. It would be cool if there were some other rules like, magnetic chess, anti-king, ultimate en passant, double move, and peace chess, ext. If there was more ways to combine the rules with each other that would greatly increase the possibilities for new games, but that can be difficult because sometimes rules clash and create new scenarios that require human creativity to solve. What if I want to move the opponents pieces, let pieces share a space, include a checker style capture, capture without moving, or play atomic crazyhouse chess? Overall this is a great app.

Developer Response ,

Some of the things listed are possible in the app. Checker style capture is in there, you can play many different forms of checkers. Capturing without moving is possible, you can make a move that captures and returns to the original square in the advanced piece creator. Atomic crazyhouse can be played by selecting drops and atomic in the rules menu
