Description

The essential app for all bird lovers! How often do you hear songs and calls of birds around you - wouldn't it be good to know what they are?

Chosen by Apple for "Apps for the Great Outdoors"

Chirp! has been designed by nature specialists specifically to help you learn and identify bird song. It is also a great feel-good pick-me-up!

Listen and learn bird songs and calls from across the country, with up to 34 seconds of song for each bird, and alternative recordings for some birds. The songs and calls are of the highest quality, provided by the world-renowned Macaulay Library at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Bird names are in English and French. If there's a sound missing that you would like us to include, just let us know and we will do our best to add it in!

On first use, Chirp! selects birds for your current location, but then you are free to select any province or territory on the Map Screen, to learn the common species from east to west and north to south. Or you may prefer to select all birds to learn the whole range! Try sorting by song style, so that you can compare birds that hoot and coo, or those with high pitched songs for example. If you are a beginner, sort the birds by commonness, so you can listen to the most familiar ones first, then move on to less common backyard visitors.

Make a shortlist of your favourites so that you can find them quickly (tap the + icon above the image to add birds to your favorites list).

After listening, try the quiz to test your memory. Answer fast to earn a score multiplier and get on the high score table! Experienced birders can use the custom quiz to help distinguish and learn similar songs.

And when you need a rest, try the slideshow feature - choose which birds to include, maybe add background bird song, then simply relax. If you want to continue learning while you relax, switch the voiceover on and hear the name of the bird announced at the end of each clip. This is also a good way of competing with the family - who can say the name of the bird first?!

"Identify" bird calls was not what I thought.

Maybe I was expecting too much. When the description said I would be able to identify bird calls, I thought I would be able to use my phone as a microphone and the app would identify the bird! Nope. You have to know the call and go through all the bird songs till you find the one that matches. If you just like listening to bird calls, you will like this app. It is nice the way they have the different calls categorized/ organized.

Great bird call learning app

The data bank is a decent size with many song variations the birds may have. It’s definitely worth the cost for people who want to learn bird calls and expand identification knowledge. Nice layout too!
