ChromaSonic is an artwork that merges human and artificial perception.

By Johannes Girardoni, installation and multimedia artist.

ChromaSonic is about three things:

Generally, you use your eyes to see, and your ears to hear. Art can change that. ChromaSonic lets you hear what you see. ChromaSonic is an artwork that makes light audible.

ChromaSonic interacts with you in different ways – it’s real, hybrid or pure.

ChromaSonic is an artwork you can use to create your own, while connecting your senses in new ways. Each mode lets you capture what you are sensing with your eyes, your ears, and your technology. When you instantly share with friends and followers, tag your creations with #chromasonic to contribute to the ChromaSonic art feed from around the globe.

Fun but limited

I really enjoy playing with this app. It uses the iPhone’s front or back camera and pixelates the view, then creates tones from the pixels. You can vary the number/size of pixels and I find that using fewer/larger pixels results in a more pleasing audio portrait. There is also an option to use a solid color screen whose color slowly drifts through the spectrum, producing a morphing monotone, or a combo of camera + solid color. Altogether a fun and interesting tool to experiment with.
Unfortunately there is no provision to record the audio or video. I have attached my iPhone to a PC and recorded audio that way, but the iPhone’s mic is live so ambient sounds get recorded too, like it or not. The mic cannot be turned off. Plus this method tethers you to the PC.
