The New Forest cicada (Cicadetta montana s. str.) is the only cicada native to the UK. During May to July it sings with a very characteristic high-pitched song that is particularly difficult for most adults to hear, because it's at the edge of our hearing range. Sightings of the cicada within the New Forest date back to 1812, but the last unconfirmed one was in 2000. However, it's quite likely that colonies remain undiscovered in less visited parts of the forest. The New Forest Cicada Project has developed this app, that can detect and recognise the song of the cicada, to allow everyone to join the hunt.

It does it’s job.

As far as I can tell this app does it’s job. Within a very narrow spectrum of the insect world it is doing an amazing thin; taking a bugs call, comparing it to a library of such similar calls that I can’t hear the difference and giving reasonable answers in a very short time period.

I hope the developer will be able expand the library of insect sounds and include insects from North America and possibly from the whole world. I realize it is a lot to ask but it’s already in amazing program.

My one suggestion is that an explanation that this program is only insects in the UK should be right next to “download this app” so people don’t get so frustrated.
