Description

Reality is probably overrated. Art is not. Discover the Pixel is Data creative apps series for the iPhone and the Mac and make unexpected pixel art based on your photos.

The Cinétype app is a pixel art UFO.

The objects produced by the Cinétype app belong to a new kind of photographic media, where the birthing-process of images is brought forward, taking power and celebrating its profound meaningfulness over the "ultimate" image itself — through the use of cinemagics.

Building on the work behind the Pixel is Data app, the Cinétype app provides a palette of animation parameters to produce surprising, high definition video results using pixel data extracted from photos and drawings alike.

The Cinétype app is a tribute to the invention of photography by French engineer Nicéphore Niepce and its original, slow motion, chemical processing.

It's free, forever.

Novel idea, little explanation, narrow variety, buggy UI

Nice little app; Not much variety of functionality, but the little part it offers is unique, useful and interesting. The app is quite buggy on my iPad; It sometimes crashes, swipes don’t work sometimes if I don’t use the app in 2x zoom mode. It doesn’t support portrait mode. When I leave the app for a second when it is rendering, the render finishes normally but doesn’t produce any output. Finally, the app’s icon looks awe-inspiring, but I don’t see any ways to create such a video through this app? A little article on the general algorithms used by the app would also be a great companion. Anyways, creative, novel work! 👍🏼✌🏿

Great App, Wrong Platform...

So after using it for a few days, I have to say, it’s a great app. Very well designed, easy to use and understand, and it produces some really cool visual art that you would be hard-pressed to find other apps producing. The fact that it’s totally free with no ads or in app purchases makes it even that much more awesome. My only issue is I think the app requires too much computing power to really be taken full advantage of by phone. Because it’s rendering an entire video directly on your phone, which has limited rendering power mind you, some of the rendering times can be very long depending on which options you select. The app would’ve been better fit for MacBooks or at least iPads which can do quite a bit more heavy lifting. In such a case, the user would be able to take full advantage of the apps capabilities no problem. Still, highly recommend.
