Classical KDFC
Ratings & Reviews
I too grew up listening to KDFC on the radio, at home & in the car. I always appreciated that they play complete pieces all the way through (all movements), without talking over any of it, but including as “bookends” informative historical tidbits about the composer, the piece, and/or the performers. Also always clearly identified the performing group, conductor, composer, & year of composition, which greatly increased my knowledge about “classical” music. It’s nice in this age of AI and autoplay, when music format stations of any genre are rare & super-automated, to listen (even on the internet!) to a station that still respects the input of “DJs” and the relationship of listeners to human music curators, even if they’re no longer sitting in a studio putting the records on turntables (I think). I wish I could afford to donate, but I’m on a fixed income & have a lot of survival expenses to cover just now, so I’m grateful to those who do donate & make this possible. So I’m giving them this 5-star review instead.
I grew up in a small town in Chile. There was a radio station that played classical music parts of the day, my mother would always have it on. When we came to this country in the mid 50s there was a station before Kkhi that also played classical and operatic music part of the day then . . . horror, they went away. But then we were saved by Kkhi and then . . . horror again! They would be going away too! But the gods of music saved us again and gave us KDFC! I’m considering leaving this country because it has become so upsidedown but thanks to modern technology I will be able to take KDFC with me. I see other comments where people would like to hear more operatic music, so would I. I have commented on this before, but it hasn’t happened. The human voice is one of the most beautiful instruments when used well.I have been a supporter for some time and will continue to do so as long as I’m able. Keep up the good work!
OK well I had to come up with some kind of a catchy title for my review. I've been listening to classical music since before I was born earliest recollection is the Beethoven violin Concerto. I recall listening to KKHI & KDFC back in the 1960's. Scott Beach did overnight program ending with "That's All" and making clever comments about Keith Lockhart landing on the roof to take over the morning shift. Eventually KKHI bowed out.Happily many of the KKHI personnel joined KDFC. Many years laterKDFC switch to no advertising format and the rest is (recent) history. I have been enjoying listening to the holiday spirit channel and have been wondering just how long it will stay on it is almost March and I'm still enjoying it. I my only criticism is that I would like to hear more diversity i.e. less well-known composers such as Adolph von Henselt.I would also like to hear more music by female composers. Thanks for asking my opinion.
I’ve been listening (and contributing) to KUSC and KDFC (depending on where I’ve lived) for decades. I love the music, the presenters and their vast musical knowledge. I love the wide variety of music played, and I especially love the commentary. It adds to my appreciation of the music. However, there’s a software glitch that I can’t seem to fix by either shutting down my phone and rebooting or by reinstalling the app. And that’s the glitch that the titles of the piece and the composers no longer reflect what is currently playing. When I open my phone in the morning if I reboot my phone, it will show me what is currently playing, but then never change throughout the day unless I shut down my phone again. Even a software update on my phone doesn’t fix this. It drives me crazy because I’m always trying to figure out the composer and I double check my phone to see if I’m right. Or I hear something that I completely don’t know and I look at my phone to find out what it is and who the composer is, and I discover that the title and composer are still the same ones that they were at 8 AM. This has been a problem for the past six months or so.Please please fix this. Thanks
I was fortunate enough to have attended a school where classical music appreciation was very important. We were taken by bus to go to the symphony 5 times a year. They were special youth concerts, where the conductor would first tell the kids what the music was all about, which instruments would be involved and why, then have the orchestra play. One concert might have 3-4 of such introductions. At home almost everyone played an instrument. Every family get together was filled with music and singing.Classical music has been my go to my whole life, for joy as well as for soothing my soul in difficult times. KDFC has been my go to for many years now. Such great programming. Thank you.
I recall some years ago when KDFC Classical appeared on my radio dial. I was immediately smitten. The other classical (PBS) station in our area switched to indi-mix music to avoid competition. I’ve been a sustaining supporter of KDFC ever since. I listen every day, mainly morning and evening. I especially love Laura Downes in the evenings because she tells stories about the composers along with playing their music. I also enjoy the California All Night program because they often play more unusual music. My only wish is that the daytime music would be more varied. I hear the standards of Vivaldi, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Beethoven, the most commonly heard, all the time. It fades into the background. Nonetheless, I am so grateful for this station and their offerings. Best music on the dial!
