Description

Supporting Colorado Native Plant Society with proceeds from the app. Author Al Schneider presents a guide to the plants of the Colorado Rockies.

High Country Apps is proud to support the Colorado Native Plant Society (www.conps.org) through donations and providing the Colorado Rocky Mountain Wildflowers app for their educational and advocacy work.

Colorado Rocky Mountain Wildflowers presents more than 500 wildflowers, shrubs, trees, and ferns of the Colorado Rockies and Greater Rocky Mountain Area. Designed for expert and beginner alike, this guide presents each species in a clear, informative format that provides photos and illustrations of the plant, an easily understood description, distinctive field marks, preferred habitats, and tidbits on the plant’s ecology and cultural use.

An innovative, easy-to-use key allows the user to select flower color, leaf type, and other characteristics to quickly identify unknown plants. You are on a hike, look down and see a flower with yellow petals and opposite leaves but don’t know its name. It could be tall and thorny, sticky with black berries, sweet-smelling with square stems. Just select what you do know on the app and all plants matching your description will be shown. Photographs and information used by the app are stored locally, making the app available to use with or without a data connection.

The app covers the Colorado Rocky Mountains from the foothills to the alpine zone and although we show you a few plants found exclusively in Colorado, the vast majority of the plants shown can also be found through the Rockies of Montana, Wyoming, and New Mexico.

We have been careful to include the most abundant and visible plants and also those less common but found in unusual habitats, such as, wetlands, ponds, and rocky slopes. We have also chosen species from various altitudes, from 85 families and 200 genera, and from all geographic locations -- East Slope, West Slope, and the mountains between.

We hope this app increases your enthusiasm for the plants that give us all life and inspiration. Revel in the wildflowers and infect others with your love of the land.

Fantastic, Packed with Information

Moving to a new area in Colorado, this app is helping me tremendously identify and become at home with the local native plants. As well, I’m able to quickly determine invasive non-natives that I can remove right away. Thank you for creating such a wonderful resource.

Wonderful

Finally an app for Colorado wildflowers. Rather than trying to figure out which of my wildflower books to bring on a hike I can just have my phone. The app covers alpine, subalpine, montane and foothills zones. Includes photos and drawings for help in identification. Search capability is good. I would like to see a place to enter notes on a plant, and also to enter where and when I've seen a plant. It would also be nice to have a "similar to" function. But I still love the app even without these capabilities.

Please fix search function

I tested the app out by searching for a blanketflower. When I chose the characteristics I could only choose one color and not multiples. I could not find it by choosing orange or red. I was only able to find this flower when choosing yellow. Many of the gaillardia’s I see are mostly red or orange.
It would be really nice if I could choose both colors, but the app won’t allow that. Many Colorado flowers, like the columbine and blanket flower, have more than one color. Even in the tidbit description multiple color characteristics are chosen. The browse section is nice but the search function doesn’t work well.
