Not quite the card game, with issues on older devices
If you’re looking for the card game exactly in an app, this is not it.
You have to pay to get the original card designs versus the garish default set. There’s no foreign aid. If you win a challenge, the card you revealed gets shuffled back into the deck. If you assassinate someone while holding an Assassin card and they challenge you, they only lose one card instead of two—one for being assassinated, the other for losing a challenge.
I also had issues on an iPhone 6s—the app would take 2 minutes to load; it would sometimes freeze if a player’s time ran out; the app crashed several times in the middle of the game and I was booted because I the app took too long to restart. Comparatively, on an iPhone XR, it runs smoothly.
However, if you’re obsessed with the card game and are willing to make some compromises, the app definitely fulfills the gist of it. It’s just as satisfying to bluff and to challenge someone successfully. You lose out on body language cues, but the chat feature with preset lines introduces a controlled, playful dynamic. Plus, Coup is one of those games—app or card—where skill is irrelevant. You’re gonna win some, you’re gonna lose some, and if it’s your kind of game, you’ll have fun playing along the way.
To start off, I love the card game and I own the hard copy. When I saw this app in the manual, I knew that I must have it. But, lost of times when someone turn times out, it’s me getting booted b/c the whole thing lagged and 3 turns have gone by!! This is really frustrating. Otherwise, good game, but not very representative of the original. For example, where is foreign aid? Why can’t the cards be the original and not behind a paywall? Most of the time I get confused about what the cards are because I’m sooo used to the original. I would buy the og cards, but with all the fixes, it’s not worth it.
Fun but full of bugs...
The mobile version is similar to the table top but with minor differences. My major complaints are the game won’t let me login via Facebook, so I created a standard login and 85% of the time it errors out during login over “data could not be read wrong format” after trying to login 6-10 times it usually goes. Then while in game frequently when trying to match random opponents it won’t load the match tile. So I play on practice mode a while only to find that my match mode game has timed out and I lose points. Sometimes cards don’t swap during challenges after being exposed. Basically practice mode is the only thing that functions as expected and then still some glitches occur. It’s a free game and I like Coup so meh I’ll play it anyway. Don’t expect real satisfaction. They need complete major updates.
