Crashcount opens the door to Crashscape, a living augmented-reality artwork where painted 30-foot cubes mark the places where real traffic crashes happened. Each cube is one actual crash, translated from public data into expressionistic art and placed back into the city as a monument.
What usually disappears into spreadsheets, police reports, and passing headlines becomes visible as public memory. Crashscape turns the city into an enormous immersive gallery, where streets, intersections, and blocks become rooms holding the memory of what happened there.
The scale comes from the city itself. Since 2022, more than 400,000 traffic crashes have been recorded in New York City. Crashscape's current street-level index includes more than 320,000 crash-derived cubes, filtered for places that belong in a witness walk. At more than 8,000 hotspots, place-specific audio explains what happened in clear terms and creates a moment to pause.
Crashscape is not frozen at launch. Crashcount updates the record nightly. As new crashes enter the public data, new cubes are created and new hotspot audio is written. The artwork keeps changing with the city.
Crashcount also helps you understand the street around you. See what has happened at your exact location, look up the safety record of any street, school, address, or intersection in NYC, and see the political districts and neighborhoods connected to where you are.
The app asks you to bear witness, not just browse. Your witness record and badges help you return to Crashscape and learn your own neighborhood from this different perspective, including progress toward witnessing sites across a community board or the city. You can also leave notes at crash sites as part of a moderated memorial layer. Notes are reviewed before appearing publicly.
