Mediocre, but good for Merge

I got the Merge Cube as a gift for my birthday. I fooled around with the free apps, but none were interesting enough to hold my attention for long. Tiltball was okay, though quite frustrating.

The Merge Cube is a cool concept, but it seems very hard to built an enticing game around it in practice due to THREE MAJOR FLAWS. It’s (1) tiring to hold the Merge cube for awhile, (2) difficult to manipulate the iPhone and Merge Cube at the same time, and (3) frustrating when the iPhone “loses” the Merge Cube and you need to refocus.

Of the game and apps I’ve used, some try to integrate the cube’s unique features into the core gameplay. Others take a gameplay concept that doesn’t necessarily need to be associated with a cube, and put it on a cube. For pretty much all the games of the first type, the gameplay is frustrating because all three flaws of the Merge Cube inevitably affect and degrade the gameplay. In games of the second type, the three problems do not NECESSARILY arise, though in many games they still do.

Cube Conquest is a game of the second type, a tower defense that did not have to be on a cube, but happens to be on a cube. Being on a cube introduces some “fog of war” to the gameplay, where you cannot see all sides of the cube, and some novel movement paths for the enemies. These are marginal innovations to the TD scene, not adding much to the user experience, and certainly nothing future TD makers will copy. The graphics are decent, and the music is quite good. The towers are very basic but adequate. The interface is intuitive.
Now, for the flaws. The principal ones are luckily avoided. Because you do not need to hold the cube and can simply rest it on any surface, flaw #1 is avoided. Though you manipulate both the phone and the cube, you do not need to use both at the same time, so flaw 2 is avoided. Finally, it’s easy to focus on the cube due to a lack of vigorous motion, so flaw 3 is avoided. However, it is difficult to press some buttons, like Retry and Menu. Even though they’re big, I always have to press on them multiple times for my touch to register. Additionally, the
Mining Towers are just too strong when coupled with the player’s ability to just speed tap on the aliens to kill them. It’s too easy to hold off a wave with a basic tower and the power of tapping while Mining Towers make bank in the background. Finally, the game is ridiculously short. I finished the first two-thirds of the game in around 40 minutes, and there’s absolutely no incentive to replay levels once you get 3 stars. No special currency, no profile experience points, nothing. Plenty of both less and more expensive tower defenses offer much more gameplay that’s much more engaging. That said, this was decent. The towers were decent, the aliens were decent, and the levels kept me engaged with tapping the aliens and building towers the entire time.
Overall, it’s probably the best game for Merge Cube, which isn’t saying much. If you’ve already got a Merge Cube and are looking for a game to make the purchase somewhat worthwhile, this game is it. If you’re thinking about buying a Merge Cube to try this game (or any other Merge Cube game), don’t bother.
