What People Are Saying about ColorReader?
“This device is incredibly easy to use - and it’s dependable.”
John Metz - Haddon Painting
“I love it. It cut one hour of time off my desk.”
Debbie Deutsh – Interiors by Cornerstone
“In this industry, time is money. If I can’t get the exact color they want, I’m losing time and material costs. “
Jon Ipock – ProTastic Painting
“I have not stopped using it in matching colors to fabric and wall covering. It has saved me so much time in trying to match with paint chips.”
Vincent Wolf – Vincent Wolf Associates, Inc.
“There are many contenders in this field, but this in my opinion is the only one that provides the best balance between accuracy, ease-of-use and price. Whatever color you read with your ColorReader will be matched against those fan decks and the best matching returned. This is a much better alternative to purchasing multiple paint samples and trying them out, and is in my opinion the best bang for the buck.”
“Bought this (the lower cost one) because it seemed there had to be a better way than trying to match paint swatches to what is on the walls now. Setup was straight forward, and the app is fairly easy to use to take readings. The device accurately identified a swatch that I had, and it was straight forward to take multiple readings of the long ago painted walls in our old house.“

Ratings and Reviews
Pretty good app
Be aware that you need to purchase the Datacolor ColorReader scanner ($99 and about 1x2.5 inches in size) for the app to work.
I am very impressed with the fact that in seconds, no matter what time of day or lighting situation, I can get a great match and 2 fairly close alternate colors for a scanned color from s device the size of my thumb.
I have been using the app with the regular ColorReader Datacolor Scanner to match Sherwin Williams Paints and have found that not all the SW paints are in the palette swatches. I scanned and the SW Neutral Nuance palette of colors that go together from room to room and found an 80% match rate. Didn’t matter whether I scanned in daylight or artificial light. All the Neutral Nuance colors just weren’t in the SW ColorReader palettes. Not the fault of the app, but It would be nice to include the full paint line. I am very particular about color and don’t like to play the close, but no cigar game.
One thing I would like to see added is the ability to search by entering a paint swatch number. That would make it easier to add complementary colors listed on the back of the chip card to a palette.
I’d also like to see the ability to drag the colors in my palette list to a specific place in the palette so I can judge them side by side and prioritize them visually.
It’s great to be able to switch through the complementary, triad, analogous and monochromatic color schemes. A quick and dirty way to get the job done or a way to get the creative juices going.
Also cool to scan solid color fabrics to make sure you’re in the right range. It’s still better to lug around samples, especially if the fabric is a mixture of colors.
Not so good photo reproductions, but scanning these is always problematic. You need to find a wide swathe of continuous color to scan.
The deal is, if you need to match a color that’s on a wall, the ColorReader scanner and app will do the job in seconds. So much better than the tedium of going through physical paint store paper swatches.
If they can manage to add a search function and get the full range of paint colors the Vendors offer, then I would give 5 stars, otherwise 4 stars.
Very accurate and easy to use
Matched my wall color perfectly. I usually have trouble connecting Bluetooth devices, but this was so easy to connect and use! I haven't used the coordinating colors function yet, but it looks very useful.
I’m a painting contractor and we only use Benjamin Moore colors. I scanned 2 freshly painted areas one with bone white one with white dove and was unable to detect the two colors. As it turned out when I searched the fan deck for these 2 colors on the app neither exists. They really needed to have all of their colors updated before they launched this device/app. Wish it worked it would’ve made my life a lot easier
With Family Sharing set up, up to six family members can use this app.
