Not good for foreigners until they speak language

This service has tremendous potential and works well if you speak Chinese. If you don’t, it’s a crap shoot. Most drivers do not check messages so if you say “Canadian woman red shirt by bus stop,” they still can’t find you and then call you- problematic if you don’t speak the language. Beijing people very willing to help but often not available when driver calls. I have suggested multiple times they train drivers to check messages. There is technology that would allow this to be done hands free or alert them and read them to them (or drivers could just answer when stopped (often in Beijing traffic). Until my Chinese improves, will use as infrequently as possible

Great chinese Uber app!

You need this! Only works with WiFi ! So make sure you actually have connection 24/7. It accepts USA number too - any number just switch the dial to United States. Wait for the text and connect it. Also it accepts visa too. I used my Bank of America card. DIDI is way cheaper than a taxi. A taxi will scam you and overcharge you! A 30 min drive is less than $11 or even $7. In order to find you car the picture and license plate of the person is in the DIDI that was chosen for the ride. None speak English, so sometimes they might call you for precise directions- hand your phone to nearest chinese person and point to building. Many help out. Ni hui shou ying yu ma? Means do you speak English. Tai xie xie le means thank you so much. Practice them! Download the “sayhi” app for translating and again it only works with internet connection. Tip: any Woman foreign or not! should never be by themselves! Especially at night. Be very careful, while this app is useful, I never went by myself I went with my husband always! If you feel in your gut the driver seems sketchy. Don’t enter it and get another didi

Great App- Good service recovery for bad drivers

We used this app a lot while traveling in China. Sometimes Chinese drivers can be shady- we had one that talked on his phone and drove recklessly and one that made three intentional detours that resulted in a much higher increased fare. DiDi asks you to enable recording while on the drive- do this because when you have a bad experience they ask if they can access the recording. There are also buttons to immediately call the police if you find yourself in a bad situation. When we had the driver who took the detours, the app asked immediately if detours had been taken, and only charged us the estimate. The only downside, sometimes it doesn’t translate into English automatically so one of my friends had to take a picture with her phone on a translating app to see what it said. It has a great feedback section for every ride!
