Not an Active App
Chose earnest specifically because they boasted to have a streamlined, easy to manage approach, with the app being a big part of that.
Since joining, the App has been completely inactive, unable to login at all. Error message says “Something went wrong” and tells you to call or visit the site homepage. Website obviously doesn’t help. But the support desk at the number provided on the error screen said “Oh yeah we don’t really have anything to do with the app. We hear that a lot that it’s down.” When I asked if it’s been up at all in the last few months, she said “I’m not sure. I couldn’t say.”
Restrictions on what you can customize in the app is one thing... inability to log in at all is another. But the company doesn’t appear to have any plan to invest in it.
It has potential
I only had the privilege of using the other app for a month before it went under construction and to be honest the modernness of the app and the website is why I chose to go with Earnest in the first place. Everything seemed very professional and forward. I will be the first to admit I was rather confused as to why you made the decision to create a whole new app instead of just fixing the one you had, but I guess that is here-nor-there. Instead of giving you 1 star and bashing you about what is wrong, I’m going to give you five stars and make recommendations on how to make the app even better. 1)Put a place in the app for people to send in recommendations on how to make it better. 2) update the ‘How long to payoff’ to reflect the actual time left instead of the original loan length. 3)Add in some software so I can see that if I add an extra $25 to each payment how much quicker my loan will be paid off and how much I will save on interest. 4)Add things that make people want to open the app and mess around... again I chose you guys because I was under the impression you were a modern more forward thinking company, not just another banking institution...so make yourself different! You guys got this :)

Progress but still lacking
On the one hand I’m happy that earnest has finally released a new app. Given that their old app has been offline for about a year. The fact that rather than updating the old app they created a completely new one is a bit confusing. (They look almost exactly the same, same layout, same naming conventions, and same app logos). I’m also disappointed that the new app is missing much of the functionality that was great about the old app. For a company that markets itself as having the technology to make student loan refinancing easy and more efficient for borrowers, the lack of a fully functioning application has really hurt their user experience. My thought is they probably issued a new app so as to distance themselves from the 1.5 star rating their old app currently has. Which is entirely due to it being offline for a year when it previously had great reviews. That being said the new one still needs work or it will end up with the same low ratings.
