If you deal with CSV data, GET THIS!
Plaintext
I have to work with CSV files from more sources than I can count in preparing bulk mailings. There's nothing else like it, and there's nothing like it anywhere other than the Mac. I've used this for every kind of analysis, troubleshooting, data cleaning, database hacking—everything you can imagine a CSV can be used for. This program chews through massive files like no other. There are NO unexpected gotchas such as spreadsheet programs can present when they make assumptions about data types and conversion. If I could give this six stars, I'd give it another just for the ease of using the Transpose command on enormous data files. Yes, you have to wait for a gigabyte to be transposed, but you'll get a progress report and it WILL get done. And can you believe it? Scripting! Command-line integration! And then go buy their counterparts for JSON and PLISTs in the "Essential Editors Bundle."

Beautiful and capable

As someone who works with a lot of CSV files, I had been looking for a simple, well-designed viewer/editor like this for ages. Excel is a bloated mess with very poor defaults for opening CSV files. I had been using Tad, an open source equivalent, and it was functional but quite clunky. Easy CSV Editor nails it. The UI stays out of your way and feels very Mac-native. It elegantly handles all of the basic operations stuff like dragging & dropping a column to reorder it. And it has a lot of smarts – auto-detects delimiter characters, escape characters, line break formats, and preserves all of that on save. The only thing I didn't love was the default behavior of prompting to confirm format when opening new CSV files. (Understandably cautious, but too much friction for me.) That was easily disabled in the Preferences. This guy thought of everything.

Everything you need; nothing you don't.
Harry Manassas
A major problem with most programs that are for viewing and editing .csv files is they make assumptions about data in the file for the purpose of presentation. Things like rounding numbers, re-formatting dates, assuming things are phone numbers when they're not. Easy CSV editor more-or-less presents your data completely unmodified from the source file, with the exception of emails becoming links and the settings you put in for how to read the file. This makes it far easier to work with the data when you're trying to build processes that rely on the data being unmodified.
Developer Response
Thanks for the review and rating, Harry! Related to "emails becoming links", there is a setting in "Preferences/Settings -> Viewing -> Detect - Links and URLs" which lets you control if an email address becomes a link or not. Please note that this is only a visual indication, the CSV file won't be changed in anyway.
Moving Excel documents to Filemaker Pro
cmugrick
I am a FileMaker Pro person in an Excel world. I hate it when someone sends me an Excel spreadsheet as a report with headers and footers, rows and columns and extra chunks of text that I don’t need. Easy CVS Editor lets me clean up the data and remove unwanted formatting, unneeded text, rows or columns. I save the Excel Spread sheet as .csv and open it in Easy CSV Editor. Then edit out the information I don’t need. FileMaker Pro can then import the data for me to use. The process works very well and I can bring the information into FileMaker Pro with out a lot of hassle. If you are doing OCR from a document with lots of tabs, Easy CSV Editor could also help keep your columns in line.
