Description

The Emmett Till Memory Project is your complete guide to the legacy of Till’s murder. The app takes users to the most important sites in the Mississippi Delta and beyond. Each historical location on the map includes expert-vetted narratives, access to relevant archival documents, and a collection of historic and contemporary photographs. The ETMP teaches users what happened at each site in 1955 and the sites have been commemorated since 1955. By telling Till’s story from the perspective of each site, the app encourages users to wrestle with different versions of  Till’s story and think critically about how that story has been passed on.

Invaluable

Emmet Till’s story holds the same gravity in US history as that of Rosa Parks and MLK; it is a non-negotiable lesson. The fact that his story, chronicled by leading scholars, is available for anyone in this interactive format, is huge. Two semesters ago, I was a student in the class of one of the collaborators on this project. We were lucky to learn firsthand from a scholar of Till’s story, and I can say the academic passion driving this project is amazing. I can only hope that this app reaches the front page of the App Store.

Valuable

Sure wish I’d known about this app a week ago when I was in the Delta because finding the markers and following the story is not easy. As the app points out, parts of the story have been ignored in favor of telling the Tallahatchie County part it; this app takes us further.
