Empire is a strategy and tactics war game, pitting you against the computer. The game is played on a computer generated map that contains land areas, sea areas, and cities. The object of the game is to eliminate the opponent by capturing cities and destroying the enemy forces. Cities once captured have production capability, and can produce units such as armies, fighters, destroyers, submarines, or carriers for offense or defense. Of course, the computer is trying to crush your forces and take over the world, as are you.

Early in the game, exploration is most predominant, followed later by planned offensives and holding actions, till eventual victory or defeat.

Warning, typical games can take as long as ten hours, and some people find the game addictive. The program keeps the game state in a disk file, and a single game usually takes multiple computer sessions.

Since you can store the game on some cloud service (e.g. iCloud) you may also continue a game with the iOS/iPadOS version of Empire (https://apps.apple.com/de/app/empire-mobile/id1465452819) and vice versa.

Fun for players of the original

This is a faithful port of an ancient VAX FORTRAN version of EMPIRE that few people besides myself will appreciate. I still have the FORTRAN source code that I saved with the hopes of rewriting it one day. I appreciate how it easy it is to store a saved game on iCloud and play it in both macOS and iOS.

It would be nice to modernize the graphics, but if that's not the goal of this project I have a few suggestions that may already be on your to-do list:
- Add a function to direct fighters back to the nearest city
- Make it easier for armies to board troop transports. I can't move the army onto the transport and I've had to set a destination to do that.
- Add a dark mode to make the unexplored parts of the terrain dark gray instead of white
- A floating compass rose would be more useful and elegant than that Direction menu
- The main window could use more status information around the edges to make the game easier to play. For instance, a dedicated Messages pane. Or an Edit button to switch into that mode instead of pressing "J".
- The Preferences dialog could use a lot of work. I don't know if you're limited by something like Catalyst, but surely there must be a way to make the UI look more like a semi-modern macOS application. The columns could be represented by a tab bar at the top, and buttons should only be as long as they text they contain.

Despite my criticism I'm thrilled that you've ported this particular game and I look forward to future updates!

Thank you very much for your benevolent feedback. These are some really good ideas to improve the UI and functionality of Empire. I will try to implement at least some of them in the next release. So, stay tuned.

An Official Crash Victim

First, the original "EMPIRE GAME" is very cool for it being an old nostalgic game. The version I played originally way back when was the Atari ST computer version. It is a cool game, and it still is a cool game. Unfortunately, this version comes from an old version of Empire with fewer options. But the real stinker is; the game has crashed on me twice during many hours of gameplay. Are you kidding me? Ahhhhh! For this, I give it one star. :(

not the really playable AtariST version

while i admire the stoicism of this port, when i came searching for Empire i was looking for the (hyperaddictive) Atari ST version i spent days more or less straight, playing in the late 80s early 90s.

really wish someone would port or adapt THAT version. would easily pay.
