Mental health issues related to Alzheimer's, stroke, Parkinson's disease, or other forms of dementia are often ignored or discovered late among seniors. But early cognitive screening can help differentiate between normal "forgetting" related to aging and a more serious cognitive dysfunction. Our goal is to help people catch the early signs of dementia.
The eSLUMS app was developed using the clinically validated instrument - the Saint Louis University Mental Status (SLUMS) Exam created by Dr. Theodore K. Malmstrom and Dr. John Morley from the Saint Louis University School of Medicine. This application allows doctors and allied health professionals to conduct a cognitive screening for seniors within approximately 7-10 minutes for early detection of mild cognitive impairment and dementia. Professionals will find that it saves time and money by managing results of multiple patients, simplifying test administration, and tracking data.
The application features:
* Easy test administration using just an iPad
* Scoring instruction and test administration with audio prompts
* Automatic scoring
* Quickly see trends of test scores
* English and Chinese (simplified and traditional) language options
* Localization options (for these languages) to increase test relevancy
* A dark and light theme for easy reading
* Offline or online function
* Viewing results on-the-go with an iPhone
Our PRO version adds:
* A comprehensive PDF report identical to the paper SLUMS
* Export to print and email function.
* Managing multiple patients
* Seeing full patient histories

We wanted to give a big "Thank you" to our many early users, clinicians and therapists who gave us valuable feedback to help us keep making eSLUMS better.
What's new: The biggest news is that we've made some improvements under-the-hood to improve syncing to run better when a network connection is weak or unavailable. We've also included some minor improvements to the user interface.
Tip: If you downloaded the app before iOS 11, please be sure to delete the old version of the app first and reinstall for the best results.
Ratings and Reviews
Like the questions. Wish there were more reasoning questions ("what should you do if...."). Also would like to be able to manually go to the next item without having to wait on the voice output. Overall, something I'd try if I felt it was appropriate

This is a great question. eSLUMS is based on the original SLUMS test which has many studies validating the test so we chose to keep the test identical to the original. The PRO version allows you to disable the audio and move along quickly if you'd like. Most therapists prefer to use the app in this mode since they are already very familiar with administering the test.
Sticking with paper and pencil for now
I downloaded this app. I tested it once. I would have loved to test it more but I couldn’t figure out how to test again without upgrading to pro or waiting for the retest interval to pass. I was not impressed with my one test enough to consider an upgrade. The test has face validity, as it mirrors the well validated paper and pencil published version of the SLUMS, but I would love to have access to some documentation of reliability and validity through the app. While the app was easy to use, so is the paper and pencil version, which I have access to through work, and I don’t really see a need for this right now. I might change my mind if I were able to test it more easily before upgrading to the pro version.

DeesDad, we appreciate this valuable feedback and understand the concern. Currently, the minimum retest interval for a free user is weekly - this is mainly to prevent abuse and learning effects that distort test results. Most clinicians will prefer the PRO version --
1) multiple patients 2) control over retest intervals 3) PDF test report and data file. We'd love to help answer your questions and concerns. Contact us through our email - let's make it work for you.
This app turns the SLUMS into another mobile tool for those of us who love to use our iPads in assessment and therapy. The authors took this simple test and made it a clean, easy and systematic app that takes the same or less time as the paper SLUMS. Ideal for Speech Pathologists, occupational therapists or others who screen for cognitive skills.

Thanks for the kind words and glad that it is valuable to you.
