ESPN’s Solid, But Why No Dynamic Island Love?

I’ve always relied on the ESPN app for its broad sports coverage—scores, breaking news, and highlights are top-notch, especially for a multi-sport fan like me. But it’s honestly frustrating to see it fall behind in 2025 when it comes to embracing Apple’s latest tech, like Dynamic Island. Other apps, including Apple Sports, have integrated live game tracking into this feature, making it effortless to stay updated. Why hasn’t ESPN, a giant in sports media, stepped up?Look at what’s out there: Apple Sports uses Dynamic Island to deliver real-time score updates and key plays right on my iPhone’s Lock Screen or notch, no app-opening required. It’s slick, it’s modern, and it fits perfectly into a busy day when I can’t glue my eyes to a full game. Smaller sports apps have even adopted this, proving it’s not some niche experiment. Yet ESPN feels outdated, forcing me to dig through menus for live updates when a glanceable, next-level experience is right there for the taking.ESPN’s always been a trendsetter—think Sportscenter’s heyday or your early streaming pushes—so this lag is surprising. Dynamic Island integration wouldn’t just be a flashy add-on; it’d make following games across sports more seamless and keep me locked into your ecosystem. This latest update is absolutely terrible. The ads are all broken now and are making me miss full minutes of the hockey game every time the stupid app cuts to the ad timeline. When the ads were in line with the game stream there was no interruption and everything worked fine. Now every time we watch an ad break the app glitches and doesn’t switch back to the game without me having to touch the screen and scrub forward and backward to shake it out of the frozen glitch. When I am watching hockey while washing dishes I do not have an extra third hand that is dry enough to do this. What’s worse is that at the end of the game I like to go back through the game and rewatch specific plays. Can’t do that anymore because as soon as you start scrubbing back and forth to find the correct time stamp the dumb app launches into yet another ad. I already watched all these ads. You know what this is doing? Making me not want to support a single one of these idiotic advertisers who are paying to make hockey unwatchable for me. The previous app worked flawlessly for years. I faithfully watched every dang ad even the repeated ones because it was worth it to watch games live. Used to be if you missed a game and were disappointed to have to watch it later, you could at least appreciate being able to fast forward through the ads. With this ridiculous new system of ads I am guessing that’s impossible. Thanks for making hockey not fun anymore ESPN. If I could give zero stars I would.

If you love ads and miss regular cable commercials this is the app for you. ESPN is the world wide leader in sports no question so i find myself using the app out of habit but not by choice. I would delete but i pay ESPN+ for soccer matches. Most apps start free, then they up sell you by telling you hey pay and we get rid of or minimize ads. Not ESPN. You got ads, commercials, and content trying to run at the same time causing the app to, in simple terms, not work. Sad to say but i think the only thing that really works flawlessly in this app is the running of the ads however they can only seem to figure out how to run THE SAME ad over and over again. At least cable tv switches up the commercials and u might run into something you might actually want. Espn runs the same ad before anything and everything you click there is no escaping it. I’d go as far as to say the ads work better than most of the videos they post of the actual content you are looking for. Tap in for a highlight you will get a flawlessly run ad followed by a barely functional video of the content you want. And if u miss that video and try to replay guess what, ANOTHER AD, the same ad, the same exact one u just watched. Insanity. I doubt anyone at ESPN cares they are suffering from success at the highest level. However when a formidable opponent comes along they will be in big trouble.
