Exchange Rates 4
Versatile currency converter
Only for Mac
$3.99
Tired of launching the macOS Calculator app and stepping through menu paths just for doing a simple currency conversion? Missing your favorite cryptocurrencies in Spotlight? Annoyed by the limits of these system features? Here's a solution:
Exchange Rates is a convenient, versatile, and extensible currency calculator residing in the macOS status bar and supporting many cryptocurrencies – always available and always up to date. Nothing more, nothing less. It can also notify you automatically once an exchange rate crosses a certain threshold value and thereby help you to keep close tabs on the FX market. And if your brand new altcoin isn't being supported by Exchange Rates just yet, you can add it on your own – provided there is a publicly available JSON ticker feed around which the app can use in order to fetch the latest price.
Almost everything can be done using keyboard shortcuts to enable you to easily convert an amount between two currencies without interrupting your current workflow - e.g. by having to using the mouse or even launching another window-based application. It also provides two system services to make currency conversions even more convenient (one if it is shown on the third screenshot).
All exchange rates are being updated continuously in the background, you don't have to do anything about it. Besides, the fixed exchange rates of all euro predecessor currencies, such as the Austrian Shilling or German Mark, are available as well. And just in case you would like to know what your fiat money is worth in tangible assets: Exchange Rates also offers four precious metals (or more precisely: futures contracts for them) for conversions - in grams and troy ounces.
The most important features at a glance:
• All important world currencies, many of them alternatively available as weekday reference rates from the ECB (European Central Bank)
• All euro-predecessor currencies
• Supports various cryptocurrencies out of the box, such as Bitcoin, Ether, Litecoin, Monero, Ripple and several more.
• A Widget extension for your notification center showing a list of your favorite exchange rates (see the note below)
• You can get notified when an exchange rates reaches or crosses a certain value
• Extensible: you can add other cryptocurrencies and specify your preferred ticker feed for it (it has to be a publicly available JSON feed though)
• Precious metals in both grams and troy ounces are available as well (gold, silver, platinum, palladium)
• A command line interface for currency conversions (the main app should be running though to ensure the exchange rates are up-to-date)
• Data minimization: no unnecessary data collection (e.g. no user tracking or profiling)
• Uses encrypted https connections for all built-in data sources
Please note: Exchange Rates is a research tool and cannot trade foreign exchanges on your behalf. It is however a fantastic tool to keep an eye on the FX market. But you have to keep in mind that the data is by no means realtime, particularly if you need timely updates for your investment decisions. All data shown throughout the app - which includes all exchange rates, precious metal prices and other data - is provided for informational purposes only, and does not constitute financial advice of any kind. There are no guarantees as to their availability, correctness and completeness, as the extent and scope of the data provided can vary over time.
If you should find a bug in this app, please drop me an email (the address is to be found on my website) so I can fix it as soon as possible. Thank you!
Please note: the update frequency of WidgetKit extensions (the kind of Widget available on macOS Big Sur and later) depends solely on update slots assigned to it by the operating system, which in turn takes into account how regularly a widget is being shown/used. It will increase significantly if the main app is running in the background, so this is highly recommended - albeit not necessary.
more I've owned the prior 2 releases and have generally been happy with them other than having to register for a Quandl account to get spot metal pricing which is a pain. I was having issues with release 2 updating the metal prices again so I bought version 3. It's a complete mess IMO. There are now 3 widgets that seem to interact with each other unpredictably, I can't figure out how to set the home currency and make it stay, and it keeps asking for for Apple Keychain access for Quandl even though I have set the Quandl key in the app and even given it access to the keychain Quandl. The interface is simply not intuitive and setup is confusing with poor documentation to explain it. I give up and have uninstalled it.

I do not use the widget, only the Menu Bar icon, and only for currency exchange rates. Working great and performs as expected. My only gripe (small one) is that in the menu bar drop down, it no longer has the currencies showing with the country flags, only the currency code. This makes finding the correct currency off your list of favourites slightly slower. (remember some countries have non intuative codes like South Africa is ZAR). Finidng the correct rate is was quicker in version 2 simply because of the flags. Otherwise, working just great.

follow-up bugfixes
4.1.7 Mar 11
This update should hopefully fix the menu bar popover's misplacement issue on several macOS Tahoe installations and multi-display setups for good. I've ended up completely rewriting the respective piece of code, so it should now work as expected, regardless of the system settings in terms of menu bar and dock auto-hiding or display alignments in multi-display setups. Sorry about this, and that it took me so long to finally being able to solve this issue.
4.1.6 Mar 3
A few more bugfixes, among them
- one preventing the "add/remove favorite" button in the main popover's sidebar from functioning properly when the app is being used in single-currency-favorite mode
- and another one causing the main popover's chevron-shaped part to be partly covered by the menu bar on macOS Tahoe
4.1.5 10/09/2025
This update...
- finally moves the Coratian Kuna (HRK) over to the pre-euro currencies
- is prepared to automatically do the same with the Bulgarian Lev (BGN) on 1/1/2026
- fixes several other glitches, most of them UI-related
4.1.4 09/24/2025
This update fixes various minor glitches.
4.1.3 03/25/2025
This update fixes several minor glitches in order to make things run more smoothly.
What's New in Version 4.1:
This update introduces a second widget extension (small size only) showing both quotations of a selected favorite exchange rate. It's available on macOS Sonoma (Version 14) and later.
And it finally brings back the old list styles from Version 2 and earlier. The currency pairs introduced in Version 3 may be a lot more versatile, but if you'd like to keep things simple, this app's now got you covered as well.
This means it's now possible (again) to simply add currencies as favorites instead of currency pairs, which simplifies things a lot in case you don't need different target currencies or quotation types for your favorites. All favorite currencies share the same quotation type and target currency, depending on the list mode you've selected – either your local currency (taken from your system's Language & Region setting, which is the default setting) or one of those selected in the menu bar panel's calculator.
And you might have noticed already that the LBMA gold and silver prices fetched via NASDAQ data link haven't been updated in quite a while – since Dec. 29, 2023 to be precise. It seems this unfortunate situation won't be changing anytime soon, so as of this version NASDAQ data link won't be available any longer as an alternative data source for precious metals. All its configuration data including any API key stored in your keychain will be removed. I'll try to find another similar data source, but in the meantime I'm afraid you will have to stick to the Comex future contacts (the default setting).
PS: In order to accommodate the new single currency favorite mode, the keyboard shortcuts for a favorites' info popover had to change and now require the shift key to be pressed as well. This keyboard shortcut will now select a favorite currency as the calculator's target currency.
4.1.2 07/24/2024
This update facilitates creating several favorite currency pairs in one go without having to reopen the input sheet every single time. And it fixes a few other, minor glitches in order to make things run more smoothly.

Besides that several other, minor glitches have been fixed as well in order to make things run more smoothly.
4.1.0 07/16/2024
A mere maintenance update; minor bugfixes, code cleanup, that sort of thing.
4.0.9 06/03/2024
This update should fix the "launch at login" checkbox on macOS Ventura and later.
4.0.8 04/30/2024
This update fixes a possible background crash which apparently occurred only when either the Dollar Index or one of the Gold ETFs were being shown, and makes the automatic fallback to ECB data feeds optional.
4.0.7 04/11/2024
This update improves the favorite editor a bit by saving changes immediately without the need of an "Apply" button. It also removes the favorites' grid view presentation option (by home/foreign ccy or both which doesn't really made much sense any longer due to the popover's recent facelift) and fixes several other issues.
Shana tova y'all, have a happy and fantastic new year!
4.0.6 12/31/2023
This stability update fixes several issues related to LBMA (via NASDAQ Data Link) as an alternative data source for the precious metals Gold and Silver. Besides that, the app now shows change values for this data source as well, in this case the change relative to the last fixing price of the preceding price fixing day. And several issues of the new cryptocurrency ticker feed configuration have been addressed as well.
4.0.5 12/26/2023
This update introduces an additional precision option specifically for those assets shown in the main popover's status bar, such as DXY or the Gold ETFs. This allows you to save space when showing more than just one of them since space in there is a highly limited commodity ;-). This comes in particularly handy since the app now allows for the simultaneous selection of multiple Gold ETFs, which now include GDXJ and GLDM as well.
This update also fixes several glitches, implements a couple of other minor interface improvements, and updates the builtin crypto ticker feed definitions, with many of them now containing change values as well.
Besides that the change indicator colors became a bit more crisp and the texts better readable when using the colored backgrounds.
Merry Christmas y'all, shana tova, and a happy new year!
PS: If you should find a bug in this app which passed me by or if you are missing an important feature, please don't hesitate to drop me an email. Thank you!
4.0.4 12/19/2023
This is a maintenance update in terms of improving the overall stability and performance by fixing minor issues, optimizing older parts of the code, and resolving old external dependencies for things that can now be done using macOS standard tools.
New in Version 4.0:
It's been quite a while since the last major update (sorry for that) so a considerable number of bugs and requests for improvements have been piling up. I also took the opportunity to clean up the interface and implement several other improvements which have been sitting on my bucket list for quite a while, so I hope it was well worth the wait. And there's still more in the pipeline to stay tuned.
• Version 4 introduces an all new way of adding and managing user defined currencies as well as specifying custom data sources (ticker feeds) for cryptocurrencies
• The menu bar panel has gotten a facelift, particularly regarding its list view mode.
• The overhauled list view has now has become the default way of listing your favorite exchange rates on the main panel, but the tiled view is still around and has gotten a few UI improvements as well.
• The app can now fetch the exchange rates of the most important world currencies, such as CAD, CHF, GBP, or JPY, directly from the ECB (European Central Bank) instead of taking a detour via NASDAQ Data Link for that. As a nice side effect you won't be needing an API key for this kind of data any longer.
• The app now shows the future contracts for Silver (SI=F), Platinum (PL=F), and Palladium (PA=F), replacing the old and defunct currency feeds.
• And it now supports the cryptocurrency MATIC (Polygon) out of the box.
• Ethereum has finally been renamed to Ether, since that's the actual name of the native cryptocurrency on the Ethereum platform.
• You can now choose between the SPDR Gold Shares ETF (GLD) and the VanEck Gold Miners ETF (GDX) to be shown next to the US Dollar Index (DXY)
• The preferences window has been cleaned up as well, all datasource-related configuration is now being done in the new "Data Sources" window.
• The Widget Extension is now able to keep itself up-to-date, whether or not the main application is running in the background. But it is still highly recommended to let the main app running in the background since this significantly increases the widget’s update frequency.
• I've also decided to remove the rather unstable Cloud synchronization feature again until I get around to implementing a more reliable and robust solution.
• And finally some work went into the somewhat neglected system services HUD panel.
A lot of other, minor improvements have been implemented, both UI-related as well as under the hood - particularly in terms of feed loading and internal data processing. This should make things run more smoothly. I also cleaned up the overall code base, removed lots of old and now unused code (which should improve the overall app stability as well), and fixed lots of other bugs I came across while doing all the testing.
Henceforth, Exchange Rates 4 will run only on macOS Monterey (Version 12.0) and later.
Please note: The new ECB data source is a more reliable way of acquiring the exchange rates of the most important world currencies and doesn't require an API key like Quandl/NASDAQ Data Link before. It is however updated only once per working day, so it is not enabled by default. But you can enable it or switch back to the previously used data source at any given moment. Nothing will change for all those currencies which are not covered by the ECB data. An overview of all the currencies covered by the ECB feeds can be found in the new "Data Sources" configuration window.
The Nasdaq Data Link API key is still required in order to acquire the daily LBMA fixing prices for gold and silver, since the LBMA does not provide direct and public access to this data.
Thank you for your ongoing support, and special thanks to all the users reporting issues to me which otherwise would have passed me by!
4.0.3 12/17/2023
This update fixes several glitches of the status bar item and improves keyboard control of the currency selectors.

4.0 11/29/2023
This updated fixes a regression which found its way back into the previous update and caused exchange rates with big values such as IDR or COP to be loaded with too high an imprecision. Sorry for that...
Please note: the new Widget Extension on macOS Big Sur and later requires the main app (the one residing in the menu bar) to be running in order to be updated continuously, since the widget’s ability to update itself on its own is highly limited by design.
3.4.10 07/20/2023
Several feed-related bugfixes, specifically concerning the builtin crypto currency ticker feeds
Please note: the new Widget Extension on macOS Big Sur and later requires the main app (the one residing in the menu bar) to be running in order to be updated continuously, since the widget’s ability to update itself on its own is highly limited by design.
3.4.9 07/19/2023
Fixes yet another a feed-related issue when loading exchange rates with values less than 0.01 in US Dollar terms.
Please note: the new Widget Extension on macOS Big Sur and later requires the main app (the one residing in the menu bar) to be running in order to be updated continuously, since the widget’s ability to update itself on its own is highly limited by design.
3.4.8 06/02/2023
Fixes a feed-related issue when loading exchange rates with values less than 0.0001 or resp. bigger than 10000 against the US Dollar.
Please note: the new Widget Extension on macOS Big Sur and later requires the main app (the one residing in the menu bar) to be running in order to be updated continuously, since the widget’s ability to update itself on its own is highly limited by design.
3.4.7 05/29/2023
Yet another feed-related bugfix which became necessary due to further changes in several data feeds
Please note: the new Widget Extension on macOS Big Sur and later requires the main app (the one residing in the menu bar) to be running in order to be updated continuously, since the widget’s ability to update itself on its own is highly limited by design.
3.4.6 05/25/2023
As of late the data feeds of several exchange rates weren't always updated reliably
Please note: the new Widget Extension on macOS Big Sur and later requires the main app (the one residing in the menu bar) to be running in order to be updated continuously, since the widget’s ability to update itself on its own is highly limited by design.
3.4.5 05/09/2023
• can now alternatively show relative percentage changes
• fixes the calculation of rate changes for several datasources and currency pairs
• fixes a glitch in determining the correct market status indicator for fixed euro predecessor currencies
• now shows currency flags/icons inside the favorites' informational popovers
• TRY amounts are now shown with its more common currency symbol "TL" instead of "TRY"
• fixes a few other minor UI glitches throughout the app
Please note: the new Widget Extension on macOS Big Sur and later requires the main app (the one residing in the menu bar) to be running in order to be updated continuously, since the widget’s ability to update itself on its own is highly limited by design.
