An Englishman in America ,

Needs a little fine tuning

Subscribed for the 2019 season and overall it works well. I travel a lot so the on demand replay is perfect for me to catch up on events. Only frustrating issue is when opening the app it sometimes has an error message on the screen or doesn’t recognize that I have a yearly subscription, requesting I upgrade my account. Uninstalling and reinstalling the app once normally solves this problem but today I had to do it multiple times before I could get a video feed. Get this fixed and I have no complaints. I read on other reviews that you can’t orientate or get full screen video. I watch on my iPad 2 and have not had these issues, watching full screen and in landscape mode. The app opens in portrait mode but once you have selected the video you want to watch and it’s playing just tap the video screen and it will zoom to full screen mode and allow you to orientate the image.

I expect more from one of the biggest Media companies in the world.

Absolutely ridiculous that a sport that purports to be on the forefront of technology doesn’t have basic functionality built into its own mobile app. Come on guys, the app needs Airplay. I mean you can Airplay your entire screen to your Apple TV but you don’t get full screen on the video, so I end up just using Safari and browsing to the F1 TV website to watch. At least that way I can get closer to full screen. This is so basic. Needs to be fixed ASAP before we get too far into the season. Would also really like to see a native Apple TV app released so I don’t have to deal with Airplay at all.

Other than that, the app seems to be getting better. I don’t have the crashing and other issues that many seem to be plagued with (I use on an iPad Pro and iPhone X), although I’d like some basic functionality added to it like 10 or 15sec skip forward and skip back buttons. The ability to resume where you left off, mark favorite videos, and view your watch history list are also table stakes in the streaming video market circa 2019, and given F1 is owned by Liberty MEDIA you’d think that they would accept nothing less than the best from their streaming app, especially considering how much they’re asking us to pay for the season. Needless to say the app really needs a major rework.

So many issues

For an app I spend this much time on, I’m greatly disappointed in it. I recently bought the annual pro package to watch all the extras this season and here are my thoughts on this app:
- The app crashes quite often and it doesnt remember what you were watching or where you were at in the video. So after every app crash or after it times out, i have to find whatever I was watching and scroll through the video to get to where I was.
- When watching a video on my phone or ipad, it doesnt actually go into full screen mode. The screen gets bigger but the bottom part fifth of the screen is still the app menu grayed out while the top of the video gets chopped off, quite annoying.
- In one day when multiple videos get added, they get added in random. Not in any particular order which makes it difficult to watch in order. Today trying to watch the free practice and press conferences, none of the videos are time stamped with hour/min its just day which makes it tough. They had FP2 then FP1 then press conference with team principles. It looked like the press conference would be the oldest considering the order and it wasnt, it was about FP2 results.
- Video quality on replays and live is VERY choppy. i tried to use the onboard cameras while watching (a main reason i paid for the service) and it causes the app to crash.
