They really went all our with this application. From the initial start up, a user friendly tutorial modal opens and gives a run through of ‘how to use’ to get the user up and running quick. First impressions are everything with applications. The small details truly show how passionate your company is to provide the best experience for any skill leveled user on a smart phone. I am a super noob when it comes to camera functionality, but your app breaks it down in a way I’ve never seen. It is so easy to just open and play around with. I highly recommend this application to anyone who is looking for a tool to help improve your photos. Did I mention it’s free???? This is crazy! The amount of R&D that went into this and you still offered it they still offered it as a free application!!! They do offer extra functionality at a cost, but it is so worth it. Listen, data scientist and software engineers are not cheap! Someone’s gotta keep the lights on.
Hey JohnnyIsland we sincerely thank you for the review. If you ever have any questions you can reach the FiLMiC team quickly at support@filmicpro.com
The app is great, pretty intuitive. I’ve only been using it for a little while and have yet to use it in a professional setting. It’s a little slow on the trigger tho and so you’re not sure you’ve got the shot until it shows in the camera roll. Definitely use some type of stabilizer until you get use to the way it functions, it’s good that they have a big shutter button. However I do like the familiar feel from using FilMic Pro and it has the desqueeze feature for anamorphic lenses. I love that I can shoot RAW DNG & TIFF files, the histogram is like right there and it doesn’t get into the way. I have an iPhone 11 Pro max so I can change between all 4 lenses pretty easily. Although I’m missing one huge feature, I hope it’s going to be a quick and easy update. Give me the ability to use the DOF MK2 adapter from BeastGrip Pro for stills PLEASE!!! I know you can do this. Cheers!
I needed get my hands on this app to evaluate it because I love Filmic Pro and use it regularly. My history is that of professional still photography with pro DSLR’s and I have been shooting in RAW and using Photoshop since digital photography came onto the market. And, I have been doing the same with mobile phones ever since DNG (RAW) files became an option. I said all this to simply say that I do have a basis for comparison. Now let me get to the point. This app is inviting me to pay for a subscription to get features that have been free for some time from other well known RAW-capable apps. In fact, if I paid the subscription, all it would do is bring this app onto a par with other apps that I already have that already include most all of the features being offered here. But the other apps are either free, or a one-time fee. So where is the incentive to pay for a subscription?
Hello cp77 Thank you very much for your review. Your viewpoints and insight given your background are super valuable. Indeed this is a different type of photo app. If you're looking for a completely manual camera then like most on our team do, we reach for Halide. Just tops in its class for fully manual raw. We have designed this app to be heavily focused on 'live' photography....not post processing. As we like to say, "commit to your creativity": Imagine your shot, set the film simulation that works for your mind's eye and maybe add a touch or a lot of grain depending on what you're trying to do - then simply snap the photo and it's ready to share or print and hang on the wall. It has all the joys of the old instant cameras with far more control and the usual FiLMiC quality. Now that said, our manual capabilities are no slouch. If you're a premium subscriber we offer legit priority shutter and ISO modes and DNG raw capture. So if you want this to be the 'one app to rule them all' then by all means it can do that. (although again, we still think Halide has to be installed to, they're just awesome) Thanks again for the review and if you have any questions please let us know: support@filmicpro.com
Nice addition but the interface really lacks. Not a fan of the rounded corners especially since the final photo does not have them nor does your video app. And just like the video app would be nice to have the shutter button top right when shooting landscape, a bit more convenient for one handed use. Also gets annoying that switching lenses takes two taps. So just to see my zoom lens and then go back takes 4 taps! After a while that gets ridiculous. Biggest annoyance is that my iPhone rotation setting reverts my options for exposure and focus gestures. Very bad. That setting should have no effect on a camera app. Settings area could also use a redesign. Independent focus tap would be handy as well since after setting my exposure I cannot refocus without resetting exposure. Can’t quit app without having to swipe up twice. Can’t even swipe to another app on iPhone X.
Hi fonehome. For assistance please write to support@filmicpro.com and our team will be quick to help. Thanks.
You created a photo app with nice focus and exposure sliders, saves as jpg. What does this do that other excellent products do better already (Halide). You built in custom looks for the Instagram crowd...very limited range of looks. Nothing special here. Maybe ISO and shutter options will make it stand out...other customization possible?..let’s try it out...nope, can’t even try paid features without sending $$. No trial test period. No full function evaluation possible before paying?! The fee for this app isn’t unreasonable... it just that it is a ’me too’ approach in a product that is far too immature for the price... and a subscription model as well. What does this do that others don’t already do? Guys stick to video apps .. it’s what you do best. Or at least let prospective customers fully evaluate before you try to justify subscription... which is very hard to justify given the limited functionality here.
Hi Zippy and thanks for the review. We certainly appreciate your viewpoints. But that said you should maybe take a spin through twitter or instagram and see what people are posting for photos with this app in just the first 20 hours or so since it has launched. It may be a 'new app' but it certainly isn't immature. This product represents nearly two years of R&D and is intended to provide the best experience for live capture photography on smartphone. No extra steps for edits in post. Simply commit to your creativity, dial in the shot, get the look with film grain or our film simulations, snap and share. Yeah they do look great on Instagram but this app is intended for photographers of all skill levels and backgrounds. We would hope you'll give the free options a fair shake to see if the app is worthy of a spot in your photography toolbox. We decided to forgo the 'free trial' because this is the thing that makes people feel there is a 'scam'. There is no such thing really as a free trial, you will commit to pay for it at the time you start your trial. We will do not like to do anything for our customers that we would not like ourselves. There is definitely enough in the app's free features to get a strong sense of what we have in mind. If you feel the app is for you then one month at 99cents to take it further is not a heavy commitment and you can really see how this little app shines. If you have any questions about the app or would like to continue the conversation please let us know at support@filmicpro.com
UPDATE: Checking back on this app to read all the review. Right now it’s showing a rating of 3/5. Im sure that’s not going to well with executives... I’m sorry, but I played with your app and yes, I 100% know there are better more feature rich apps out there that are free, one-time payment and incredibly fast at taking creative photos and sharing. I’m sorry, but I think once you guys got on Apple’s stage, you decided to go with a price model to make money instead of stick with the passion of creating an amazing product. There is nothing in this app that is special/unique enough to charge a subscription. This is a one time purchase type of app. There are so many alternative apps out there with the same features or more. It’s too bad that so many devs/apps are trying to go for this steady income type of model. I’m so happy there is so much competition out there.
We appreciate the updated response. Our company is incredibly small. We don't really think of our leadership in terms of 'executives'. (I'm actually on the leadership team, and I'm personally writing many responses to reviews). We are a small company of passionate creatives and we've not taken any formal venture funding. If you're familiar with FiLMiC Pro then you know the level of commitment that we have. This is going to remain absolutely true for Firstlight as well. We think that the value of the app in its free state is going missed. You can take some incredibly beautiful shots without spending a single penny. We have not included the 'trap' of a free trial, which for most people is anything but free, because it requires you to commit to pay if you don't end the subscription. Just like with FiLMiC Pro we continue to offer products we would actually want to use and through sales methods that we would be okay with as well. We hope you will take a few mins to try shooting some photos with Firstlight: try the cross-swipe focus/exposure manual controls, dial in one of the sample film simulations and see what it can do. You already have the app so why not give it a go for a few snaps and see how it feels to you? We would love to continue the conversation if you would like to email us at support@filmicpro.com
