Ready for iOS 27 • Ask Siri about your notes. On iOS 27, Siri knows what a FoldNotes note is: "Make a FoldNotes note called Fjord trip", "Add book the ferry to my Fjord trip note", "Open my note about the fjord", "Search FoldNotes for ferry". With a note open, "add this to the note" knows which one you mean. After updating, run Reindex Spotlight once (Settings ▸ Export & Maintenance) so Siri can find the notes you saved before this version. • Tasks by voice. Say it the way you'd say it to a person: "For the road trip next week I need to get the tyres checked. Add a task to FoldNotes for next Thursday." Siri works out the task and the due date, and follows up: "put it in my Work list", "flag it", "move it to Friday", "mark it done". A list is a FoldNotes project; with no list the task goes to today's daily note. • Three task phrases that work on any iOS: "FoldNotes add a task", "What's due tomorrow in FoldNotes?" and "FoldNotes complete a task". A task reminder can be marked done by asking Siri. • Your comments stay private from Siri, as they do from Spotlight. To keep notes out of both, turn off Show Notes in Spotlight and Siri in Settings ▸ Behaviour ▸ Privacy. • Tall widgets. Tasks and Recent Notes come in the new Extra Large Portrait size. • Rename a tag. Long-press a tag in the sidebar ▸ Rename. Every note that uses it is updated, and your manual order comes with it. Also improved • Tasks in trashed or archived notes are left out of Overdue, the Tasks widget, reminders and anything Siri tells you. • A note action that can't write the file now tells you, instead of showing a change the file didn't get.

Tasks • Overdue counts are worked out at the moment you look. The Overdue query, the Overdue Tasks column in database views and the task ring in the notes list now check each task's due date when they draw, so a task turns overdue on the day, on every device, whether or not its note has been opened since. • Bike outline rings do the same. The ring on an outline in your Bike folder reflects today's date without waiting for the folder to be scanned again. Also fixed • Notes with pictures lay out cleanly in the list on the first pass.

Your Bike folder, with its subfolders. • Browse the whole Bike folder. The Bike folder in the sidebar now opens into its subfolders, just as on the Mac. Tap a folder to see its outlines, and the + button creates a new outline in the folder you are looking at. Set the folder once, at the top of your Bike folder in iCloud Drive, and everything inside it is reachable. • Set the folder in Settings. The Bike button in the sidebar toolbar is gone, replaced by Settings › Bike, where you set or change the folder. Your folder keeps its place in the sidebar, with the bicycle beside its name. We recommend Bike's own iCloud folder, iCloud Drive › Bike. • Search covers every folder. Searching your Bike files now looks through the whole folder tree, and results say which folder they came from. • Links and views find outlines in any folder. Following a Bike link or a row in a database view to an outline in another folder moves the list to that folder, so the list and the editor always agree about where you are. • Open your latest outline on launch. In Settings › Behaviour, under On Launch, a new switch opens the outline in your Bike folder with the most recent change, including changes made in Bike on a Mac. If there is nothing to open, your usual On Launch choice applies. Database views • Filter by part of an outline's name. The Outline field now takes typed text, so "Outline contains Showcase" limits a view to one folder. A pick list of your outlines is still there, one row below. • "Path" is now "Row Path", to make clear it is where a row sits inside its outline. The folder is part of the Outline column. • Row previews on iPhone are a full-width sheet, with a Done button in every orientation, instead of a narrow popover. Also fixed • The Bike editing notice at the top of an outline slides away the first time you scroll, and comes back with the next outline.

This release is all about Bike outlines. • Copy links to Bike rows and outlines. Tap the ••• menu and choose Copy Bike Row Link or Copy Bike Document Link. On an iPad with a keyboard, they are in the Edit menu too. Paste them anywhere: into Bike, another outline, or a note. • Row links take you to the row. Tap one and you land on that row, whether it is in the outline you are reading or in another one. If the row has since been deleted, FoldNotes tells you. • Bike's HTML outlines are now supported, with or without attachments. They show up in your Bike folder, open for editing, appear in search, and their tasks join the Bike Board. • Indented text stays indented. Markdown pasted or imported from other apps used to lose indents of fewer than four spaces. Now any indent counts. Also fixed • Viewing Bike rows from two copies of the same outline could close the app. • Moving a row in an outline that ends with a blank row could attach its details to the wrong row.

Bike Row details sit where they should. All of this is about Bike outlines; your own notes are unchanged. A row's due date, priority and estimate are drawn at the end of the row, and when there is not enough space for them on that line they move to the line below. That line was not being given room, so the details could sit on top of the row underneath. • Completing a task in an outline no longer makes its details overlap the next row. Adding the completion date was usually what made them too wide to fit. • The same applies to setting a due date, a priority or any other attribute from the attributes editor. • Opening an outline no longer runs a row's details into the line below. The rows were being measured before their details were known. Also fixed • An outline's attributes — due dates, priorities, estimates, flags and completion dates — stay with their rows through editing and saving.

Counting that matches Bike, exactly. If you keep Bike outlines, the numbers FoldNotes shows on them now agree with the numbers Bike shows for the same file — on the outline in your list and on every row in the editor. • A cancelled row no longer counts as finished. It leaves the count altogether, which is how Bike counts it: seven tasks with one cancelled reads 0/6 in both apps, where FoldNotes used to say 1/7. • A rolled-up estimate on a parent row now covers only the work still to do, and adds up its hours and days Bike's way. Ticking a task makes the total fall, as it should. • A row's own details are drawn before the totals for everything beneath it, matching how Bike lays out a row. Your own notes are unchanged. A cancelled task in a note is still counted as resolved, because a Markdown note is not a Bike file and is counted FoldNotes' way. Getting around your outlines Links between outlines. A bike:// link names the document rather than a filename, so it survives renaming or moving. Tapping one opens that outline. Links to a file in a sub-folder are not followed yet, and the outline opens at the top rather than at the linked row — both are on the Mac already. Back and Forward now include your Bike outlines. They were skipped entirely, so Back stepped over them. Back also returns you to where you were reading. A rolled-up estimate is easier to read. Faster scrolling through Bike Outlines.

Tap any row in a database view of your Bike rows and you get a preview: the whole outline, scrolled to that row and briefly highlighted, so you can see what surrounds it before deciding whether to go there. A preview keeps your place — the table, your scroll position and your filters are all still there when you close it. New — preview a Bike row • Tap a row for the preview, or press Space with a keyboard. Long-press works too. Escape or a tap outside puts it away. • The preview shows the outline the row lives in, not the row on its own, because the question you are usually asking is "what is this, and what is around it". Bike rows work like everything else now • A row can be selected. It could not be before: rows in a Bike table could not be chosen with a finger, a pointer or the arrow keys, so nothing else worked on them either. • Arrow keys move between rows, Return opens, Space previews — the same keys as anywhere else in the app, and the same as the Mac. • A parent row shows the total of the estimates beneath it, written Σ3h, exactly as Bike shows it. A row's own estimate is marked ≈1h so an estimate is never mistaken for time actually spent. Days and hours are never silently converted into one another, since a working day is not twenty-four hours. • Any estimate now reads as a person would write it. A three-hour estimate showed as PT3H — the form the file stores — anywhere outside the eight values the attributes editor offers. • The Outline column says where the outline lives, so a row in a subfolder reads "Showcase / 03 Rail" rather than a bare name that could be any of a dozen files. Your Bike folder behaves like a collection • Tap the Bike folder and it opens the first outline, and the arrow keys move between outlines from there — the same as tapping any other path in the Library. • Tapping a file selects it, and the row stays selected. Creating one selects it and puts the caret in it. • A file deleted in Files, in Bike, or on another device disappears from the list instead of raising an error when you tap it. • A file deleted while you had it open is no longer written back by the next save. FoldNotes stops saving, says so, and offers to save a copy so the text is not lost. With a keyboard • Return expands a folder or a parent tag in the Library, and opens a database view. Left arrow collapses, or steps out to the parent. • Escape closes a preview, and closes a database view — and the arrow keys work again in the Library afterwards. Also fixed • Rows that turned white and unreadable in the Library and the note list, in the Dynamic theme. • "Note not found" when tapping All Notes or your Bike folder with "create a new note on launch" turned on.

Every row of every Bike outline, in one table. Point FoldNotes at your folder of Bike outlines and it can now put every row from all of them into a single table — then filter it, group it and sort it. Everything due this week, wherever it lives. Your outlines stay where they are, exactly as Bike wrote them. Made here, not on the Mac • New — create the view on your iPad or iPhone. Database views used to be designed in FoldNotes for Mac and synced across. A view of your Bike rows is made right here: tap New Database View and choose "Rows in your Bike outlines". It fills with every row you have, showing its status, due date, priority, which outline it came from and where inside it. It syncs to the Mac like any other view. • New — filters you can build and edit here. The fields offered are the ones a row actually carries: Bike's own Due, Estimate, Flagged, Priority and Status; the date FoldNotes records when you tick a task; each of your properties; whether the row is a task at all; which outline it came from and the path to it inside; and anything else found in your files, including attributes another app wrote. A date can be overdue, today, this week, next week, before or after a date, or within a number of days. A property with a fixed set of values offers those values rather than a box to mistype into. Shape it • New — group by any of those fields, including one you are not showing as a column. Each group gets a heading with a count and a chevron to fold it away. Grouped by a date the groups run in date order; grouped by status they run in Bike's own order. • New — choose which columns to show, reorder them, and set their widths. The row's own text stays first and stays put while the rest scroll. • New — computed columns. Days Until Due counts down and goes negative once a task is late. Days Since Completed answers "what did I finish this week" — FoldNotes writes the date onto the row when you tick it, so the outline carries its own record. Depth shows how deeply a row is nested. You can also make your own: name it and pick any two dates. • New — export a database view as a CSV, exactly as you are looking at it. This works for views of your notes too, which could not be exported from here before. Best on iPad The table wants width, so an iPad is where it comes into its own — and a large iPhone in landscape gets it as well. On a phone in portrait each row shows its text with the columns you chose beneath it, so the same view is useful in your pocket and readable on a bigger screen. Nothing here changes your outlines. FoldNotes reads them, and writes only what you ask it to.

Pictures that show up, and rows that say only what you want. A picture in a Bike outline could fail to appear on your iPhone or iPad in three different ways. One on the last row drew only a few points tall unless you left a row beneath it. One you had just added did not reach the document list until you left the collection and came back. And one could be missing while it sat on your device all along. All three are fixed. Pictures Fixed — a picture on the last row of an outline drew only a few points tall. Leaving an empty row beneath it was the workaround; it is no longer needed. Fixed — the document list did not redraw a Bike outline after you saved it, so a picture you had just added did not show until you left the collection and came back. Fixed — a picture could be missing when it was on your device all along. A file that had been downloaded but was not the newest version was treated as absent, and one inside a .biked that had not arrived yet was invisible rather than merely unreadable, so nothing ever asked iCloud for it. If you have recently restored or set up a device, that is the state your files are in for a while, whatever your storage settings. Your row, your labels New — a Bike section in Settings. Choose which details appear as small labels after a row's text: Bike's own — Due, Estimate, Flagged, Priority, Status — then FoldNotes' own, with a separate switch for each of your properties, then everything else. It appears once you have added a Bike folder. Hiding a label changes only what is drawn; the file keeps it either way. Changed — a label now says which property it belongs to, so a row reads "Context: Work" rather than just "Work", and a rating shows as stars. A row with more labels than fit ends with a count of how many are hidden instead of running them off the edge; tap it to see the rest. Fixed — Bike's own bookkeeping was being shown as labels. With Bike's "Save row created & modified attributes" setting on, every row carries two timestamps, and both were drawn on every row — which made outlines hard to read and made blank rows look as though they held something. They are kept in the file and no longer drawn. New — FoldNotes records when you complete a task in a Bike outline. Bike stores that a task is done but not when, so until now there was no answer to "when did I finish this". Ticking a task writes the date into the outline and shows it on the row; unticking it takes the date away again. Bike shows it too, and you can hide it in either app. Truer to your Bike files Fixed — a blank row is a row. One left for spacing was being removed when you saved, and a blank row with rows indented beneath it took those with it — they moved up a level. Blank rows now stay where you put them, including at the end of an outline. Fixed — an outline more than six levels deep was flattened back to six when you saved it. Bike sets no limit on depth. Those rows now keep the depth you gave them, and are shown as ordinary indented rows here while still being headings in Bike. Fixed — horizontal rules became ordinary rows, and some of an outline's document-level information was dropped. Both are now carried through as they were.

Your Bike outlines, at a glance. The document list now tells you what is inside each Bike outline before you open it. Every outline with tasks shows the same progress ring your notes show — done against remaining, red when something is overdue — and a .biked document shows the first few pictures it carries. An outline reads as a document rather than as a filename and a date, which makes finding the right one much quicker. Also in this release • Fixed — an attachment added from the attachment browser was linked to your collection instead of being copied into the Bike document. A .biked travels as one file and has to carry everything it refers to, so the outline was complete on your device and missing those files for anyone else. They are now copied in, as they always were when adding a file from Files. • Changed — a Bike outline now shows only the attachments it actually carries. Previously a reference FoldNotes could not find inside the document fell back to a same-named file in your collection, which made an incomplete outline look whole. If an outline now shows a missing attachment, that reference was already broken — it was being covered up. • Fixed — PDFs, spreadsheets and other documents stored inside a .biked now show a real preview instead of a generic icon. • Fixed — a picture could be drawn over the row's own badges, and tapping it did nothing because its tap area sat below where it appeared.

Your FoldNotes properties, on a Bike row, with the values you gave them. Define a property in FoldNotes — a Context of Home, Work or Club, a Rating out of five — and you can now set it on any row of a Bike outline from the row's attributes sheet, choosing from the values that property allows. Previously these appeared only as raw names with a free text box, so a value could be typed that the property never declared, and the Mac would show it as unrecognised. The sheet also scrolls properly now, and no longer leaves a blank band where a deleted attribute used to be. Also in this release • Several places where FoldNotes could freeze, or be shut down by iOS, if iCloud had moved a file out of local storage to save space: previewing a linked note, opening a drawing to edit, previewing an attachment, renaming an attachment, and emailing a note. FoldNotes now checks whether a file is on the device before reading it, and fetches what it needs in the background instead of waiting. • The same protection covers FoldNotes' own settings files, which on iPhone and iPad could stall the app while it started up.

Setting FoldNotes up on a new iPhone or iPad, while your collection was still arriving from iCloud, could leave a duplicate set of the built-in saved searches behind — and once those duplicates had synced, FoldNotes on the Mac could stop opening altogether. On a device joining a collection that already exists, FoldNotes now waits for iCloud to finish before it sets anything up, and repairs any duplicates it finds. Folding a section no longer counts as editing the note, either, which matters most when you use two devices: a note you idly collapsed on your iPad can no longer overwrite the same note you were writing on your Mac. Switching to another app no longer saves the note you were only reading. Also in this release • Touch and hold a picture or a note link inside a table to see what it points at. This worked everywhere except inside a table — which is the one place nothing is drawn, and so the place you most need it. • SVG pictures now preview like any other. • A picture in a table cell is fitted to the cell instead of stretching it, and honours a size set with #300. • A picture written with #hide is no longer shown as broken in preview and in exports. • In rare circumstances, expanding a folded section that contained a table or a comment block could return it empty. It no longer can. • Some attributes on a row of a Bike outline could be dropped when the outline was opened and saved here. They are now kept. • Pressing Backspace at the start of a line following a blank one now joins it to the paragraph above intact.

Your Bike library, in your pocket. Bike (the Mac outliner) has no iPhone or iPad app — FoldNotes is free, and now fills the gap properly. Point FoldNotes at your folder of Bike files in iCloud Drive, once, and it becomes a browsable library: open an outline and edit it in place, create new ones, and search across the whole folder. Your files stay exactly where they are and save straight back, so your changes are waiting in Bike on your Mac. Bike documents with attachments open too: pictures render in the editor, documents preview with a tap, and you can add files from your phone straight into the document. Bike's task statuses, priorities, due dates, estimates and flags all read and write in Bike's own format — set them here, see them in Bike. (Attachments, statuses and attributes are Bike 2 features, currently in beta; editing plain .bike outlines works with any Bike.) Also in this release • Pictures now appear right in the editor as you write, sized however you like — and notes can carry PDFs, spreadsheets and recordings, each a tap from Quick Look. • Previewing a Bike document shows its files as labelled chips; tap one to preview it. • Printing a note with pictures no longer freezes the app, and printed pages now match the PDF export exactly. • Tapping a note in the list while a preview was open looked like nothing happened; the preview now closes and the note opens.

Draw in your notes. FoldNotes now has a drawing canvas. Tap the pen in the toolbar to sketch with Apple Pencil or your finger, name the drawing if you want to, and it lands in your note as a picture. Double-tap it later and you pick up exactly where you left off — your strokes are kept, not flattened, so a drawing stays editable for as long as you keep it. A name you give a drawing becomes its caption when you preview or export the note, and drawings sync to your Mac like everything else. Also in this release • Tapping a search result, a task, or a link now takes you to that exact line rather than the top of the note. • Filtering the note list and opening a result lands on the match, not the beginning. • The widget now leads with Overdue & Upcoming, and tapping a task opens that task rather than the note it lives in. • A note you name stays named. Naming from the banner, pressing Return, or simply carrying on into the note now all do the same thing. • On Launch is now a choice of three: your last edited note, your notes list, or a new note. Choosing your notes list no longer hands you a blank note. • Images and drawings are inserted on their own line, so adding one can no longer split a task or interrupt a numbered list. • Overdue means the same thing everywhere in the app — the note list, the widget, saved queries and the task view all agree. • A daily note no longer keeps an out-of-date task block when nothing is outstanding. • Renaming an image now updates every image that refers to it.

Fixed — FoldNotes could quit while opening the note you were last working on. With "Return to last edited note" turned on, restoring that note could close the app, sometimes moments after launch and sometimes later once iCloud had caught up. Fixed — tapping a link to a note that doesn't exist did nothing in a daily note. It now offers to create the note, as it does everywhere else. Fixed — a name you typed didn't always stick. Naming a note in the banner or from the toolbar title now settles the name for good. Fixed — a name typed in the naming banner was thrown away if you tapped into the note. Fixed — a note started in Favourites could lose its favourite. Fixed — dates were written using the device's regional calendar in some countries, principally Thailand, Saudi Arabia and Iran. Dates are now always Gregorian.

Fixed — "before" could match a task due ON the date, and "after" could too. (same explanation as the Mac notes) Fixed — a note reopened at full width instead of the width you chose. On iPad especially: set a note to Narrow, close the sidebars, quit or leave the app long enough for iOS to reclaim it, and it came back full width — with Settings still correctly showing Narrow. Opening and closing the notes sidebar put it right, which was the clue: the margins were only ever recalculated when the editor's width changed, and on a cold start the editor is created at its final width, so that never happened. Changed — FoldNotes no longer opens in a second window. iPadOS was offering to open FoldNotes alongside itself, which it was never built to do: the second window came up blank, and it could leave you unable to get back to the first. Split View and Slide Over alongside other apps are unaffected. Improved — **Faster launch.** Starting up after the app has been closed for a while no longer re-examines your whole collection before settling. On a large library that is several seconds back.

Task rules can now be asked of a single task — plus a repair to the query builder on iPhone and iPad: date rules you couldn't fill in, saved queries that quietly rewrote themselves, and the filters that were only ever on the Mac. New — “Has a task where ALL of:”. Every task rule has always been a question about the note: “does this note contain a task that…”. So Task Completion is false and Task Due Date before 1 September could be answered by two different tasks — a note whose only task due before September was already finished still matched, which looked for all the world like the date being ignored. A task group asks all of its rules of one task. Tap + Add Task Rule in the query builder to start one; a query can be nothing but a group if that's the whole question. Your existing queries are untouched and keep the note-wide behaviour they were built with. Changed — “Has Tasks” now means what it says. It used to match only notes with unfinished tasks, which made it a duplicate of “Task Completion is false” and meant a note whose tasks were all ticked off counted as having no tasks at all. It now matches a note containing any task, finished or not. If you have a saved query that uses Has Tasks, expect it to return more notes than before. Fixed — "before" and "after" on Task Due Date had nowhere to put the date. You could choose the operator, but no date field ever appeared, so the rule was saved with no date and matched nothing — silently, with no warning. Under "Match all" that emptied the whole query. There is now a date picker, so the date is always one FoldNotes can read. Fixed — opening a saved query could rewrite its rules. Each rule's operator was reset to the first one in its list, so "is not" became "is", "after" became "is overdue", and "does not contain" became "contains". Saving kept the change, which meant a query you built on the Mac could be quietly rewritten by opening it on your iPhone. Operators now survive being opened and saved. Fixed — "is none" rules were dropped when saved. Task Project and Task Context both offer is none to find tasks you never assigned; the rule was discarded on the way out because it carries no value. It now saves. New — the filters that were only on the Mac. Tags gain is under and is not under, so Tag is under work matches work and every sub-tag beneath it. Date Created and Date Modified gain before and after for a fixed cut-off date, alongside the existing rolling "within last N days". Task Due Date gains within last N days for things that fell due recently. Improved — a saved query's rules now show their values. A due-date rule read simply "Task Due Date", telling you nothing about what it asked; it now reads "Due before 2026-09-01". Date rules no longer produce oddities like "Modified within 2026-01-01 days".

Widget taps now find tasks wherever they're hiding, daily notes do what you tell them, and several menu items that quietly went missing are back. • Tapping a task in a widget now works when that task sits inside a folded section. Previously nothing happened at all. FoldNotes opens the note, unfolds to reveal the task, and briefly highlights it. • Rename and the daily-note commands no longer disappear from the ••• menu on short notes. • You choose what a daily note starts with: Blank, Overdue tasks, or Overdue tasks and activity. Settings ▸ Daily Notes. • Insert or refresh the Overdue Tasks and Activity Summary blocks in any daily note, at any time, from the ••• menu. • Daily Notes now offers to start today's entry when you haven't got one, instead of saying "Nothing here". • Swipe right on a note to open the Library. • Choosing a theme while "Follow system light/dark mode" is on no longer switches that setting off. Your choice becomes your light or dark theme and the app keeps following your device. • Fixed a bright line between the note list and editor on iPad in dark themes. • With "Return to last edited note" off, FoldNotes now opens a fresh note ready to type in.
