Mostly into this for the card of the day - a fortune cookie of sorts - as brief opportunities for reflection have value on their own merits. a note to those who fancy themselves 'scientific thinkers' or 'skeptics' - you don't need to believe in anything supernatural to derive benefit or enjoyment, you just need to understand that human cognition depends heavily on the employment of archetypes and symbols, and be willing to explore their meanings in your own life and worldview a bit more deeply. Indeed, what is language, but a collection of symbols with arbitrarily assigned meanings, open to constant and ever-changing reinterpretation? I’m exploring tarot and wound up purchasing a number of the Fool’s Dog apps. I got this sampler to get a feel for the different decks, but I’ve wound up using it for my Today’s Card drawing every day because it shows the card from four different decks! How great to be able to compare the symbolism from the different decks…and it’s also a way to more deeply embrace and learn the cards, one at a time. You can set your main settings to show the universal meanings across all decks, but if you select Never, you’ll see the different takes on a particular card as represented by the respective books for the decks, some of which are far more detailed than others. Explore is also a very fine feature of this Tarot Sampler app because you can select an individual card and see a handful of versions of that card from the different decks. It’s a fantastic way to develop an intuitive approach to the tarot. The only weirdness I’ve seen so far is that, if you try to turn off too many of the decks (I’m so NOT into the vampire/zombie stuff), you’ll get odd error messages like “King of Swords missing and 24 others missing.” Does that mean that the individual decks are only subsets of the full decks? I can understand that from a licensing standpoint, but the error messages probably should be suppressed for the end user. One improvement I’d love to see in this sampler app is the ability to tap or long-press a particular card in a reading and have it replaced by that same card from a different deck, as many times as you’d like (kind of an Explore within a reading). That would make this a ten-star app!

In addition to being a very useful marketing approach, this app is a serious reading tool. While it serves the useful function of providing the reader an introduction to many decks before deciding on a purchase, it also allows for a greater depth of reading. Every deck has its own nuance and focus, allowing for a range of interpretations that takes the source deck and its unique approach into account. For example, the basic meanings of the Wheel of Fortune are similar in each deck’s companion text, yet each depiction differs, and each evokes different intuitive responses and offers different interactions with other cards. A worthwhile app for any reader.

I read tarot professionally and I use this app regularly for readings for myself. I love having dozens of decks at my fingertips and this is well-designed and easy to navigate. I particularly love having the journal function and being able to search all the past readings I’ve done on it over years, which enables me to compare when a particular card or similar readings have come up. Tarot is often about connecting dots and recognizing long term patterns, and search function definitely helps you do that! Thanks to the creators for this handy and useful app!
