  • Great app but there is an issue.

    tty01

I use this all the time and really like the interface and features. Unfortunatley, it seems to have developed a bug. I find since moving to an M1 mac that it is using near 100% CPU all the time. I thought this would get fixed quickly, but it has been a while and it is still there. Is it possible to get this corrected? I am running the most recent version from the app store.

Thanks for your report. The CPU issue has been fixed in the latest version.

  • Works great but I have a question...

    mrstee

Hi-I love this app and it is simple and does the job well and I have had it long time. My question is: up until a few days ago when I plugged in my Time Machine external drive to run overnight, in the morning I would need to eject it before I unplugged it. Now every morning that drive no longer is connected so I don't need to eject it. My concern is that the Time Machine backups aren't running all night. I don't know when the app ejects that drive or why it ejects it. Is this a bug or ???? Thank you. Like I said I like the app.

  • update: still unusable currently

    Barbara Rocha

I love this app but it's consuming so much CPU and battery that is unusable. I'm waiting for an update, but it hasn't come for the past 2 years. what a pity, such a good app... Unfortunately it doesn't look like they'll fix it. There's a more than 1-year-old answer to a review saying the issue should be fixed, but it's a lie.EDIT: I just left freespace open without noticing and my macbook air m1 got super hot. coconut battery says 43*C. I quit free space - in 5 minutes temp drops to 34*C and the pc is noticeably cooler. This app is definitely unusable. What a sad realization =/EDIT: update to Tahoe. it is still unusable. The computer gets extremely hot and slow. No updates for the past 2 years. Unfortunately it is a dead app. I don’t recommend it.

Thanks for your report! The CPU usage issue is now fixed in the latest version.

  • Two great features

    Jeffrey E. F. Friedl

The notifications when a disk/thumbstick is mounted or unmounted are great. MacOS can have a notable lag between when you physically initiate an action (plug something in, or press "eject") and when the device becomes available (to work with, or to physically remove); this app's notifications tells you when something has actually happened so that you can actually proceed. Extremely useful. On my space-starved laptop, it's very useful to always see the amount of fee disk presented in the menubar. 5 stars for usefulness.

Thanks for writing for FreeSpace. It is an indispensable app written for myself and I use it everyday in every of my Mac. I am so happy that many users like it as much as I do!

  • Speedy access to open eject drives. HIghly recommended!

    Alpine Meadows

Indispensable. Lists all drives, DMGs or external; eject individual drives with a single click each or all drives with one click. Or, you can easily open the drive from the Freespace list. Gone are the days I needed to move app windows to find a drive on the desktop or to open a folder window to get to the drive list on the sidebar. You can set up Notifications to show each ejection.

    Developer Response

FreeSpace comes in handy when you have a list of drives. They are all click-away under your menubar!

  • Sonoma Issues with excessive CPU run time

    mwgalt

I have a new macbook air running Sonoma. Every time I connect another display FreeSpace takes consumes 136% of CPU time. When running a single display there is no problem. I have used this product for many years, 10 to be exact, but this issue is a non starter for me.

  • Use it every day - Several times a day

    ccprstuff

Great for finding out quickly how much disk space is left from each of the 14 hard drives on my main computer and three networked Macs. Sometimes have to force eject a disk because I can’t do it directly from Freespace, but I figure that’s not the App’s fault but a case where the Mac thinks the disk is still being used. - a minor inconvenience. No problem with El Capitan. Probably my No. 1 used app

    Developer Response

Thanks for your observation. Every time after the Eject button is clicked, FreeSpace will confirm with macOS the drive is not being used before sending a notification to the user to disconnect the drive. If the drive is still being used, macOS can deny the Eject request. And FreeSpace will keep showing up the drive. So it is safe to only disconnect the drive after FreeSpace confirms you with the notification.

  • Just what I wanted

    Karmicfreak

I need to monitor the free space in an external 2TB SSD I use for my home folder and video/audio editing large projects, this lets me put any hard drive's free space in my menu bar, no fuss, just works. Thanks for reading my mind, in advance.

  • Thanks for the Dark Mode Update!

    David Sheeks

Excellent little utility for viewing available storage on devices and quickly dismounting external storage when needed. The Dark Mode update fixes the only issue I've ever had with FreeSpace after several years.

    Developer Response

Yes. The latest update supports Mojave and Dark Mode. Happy that you find the Eject feature useful!

  • It Just works

    HowardS1

I have a MacBook Air with a small SSD, so I need to keep an eye on the storage as I work, and this app does exactly that. Simple and effective. One suggestion: can we have an option to display the freespace as a % of the drive size?

  • What was once great….

    CyVaquero

I have used this app for for years. it has always been solid doing what I needed it to do with little footprint. However, this latest version consistently hangs on startup when I log in. requiring me to kill the process and maually start it back up. I see that MenuMeters does not support El Capitan due to the security changes, hopefully this is not related.

    Developer Response

Thanks for your report of the macOS version. The latest FreeSpace supports macOS through Mojave and dark mode.

  • Great app until...

    rejaka

The latest update is borked. The app launches, Activity Monitor shows that it's running... but it is no where to be found. This is despite the fact that the last update specifically says that the latest version has support for El Capitan. Additionally the website and support info no longer works. Prior to this update, the app was solid, but it is a total waste with the latest release.Deleting the app for now...
