All individuals have unique personalities and interests. Those with special needs are no different. Friendi is a mobile app that focuses on the qualities that make individuals with special needs truly special, and awesome, and amazing. Friendi is a super tool made for the superhero families that love and support all individuals with special needs, not just some.

· Connects families of individuals with special needs to each other based on the unique and shared interests of their loved one such as video games, parks, trampolines and/or hundreds of other interests.

· Exposes parents to service providers that cater to the needs and interests of their loved one. Friendi wants to make communicating with local service providers as comfortable and easy as chatting with a friend (through an instant messenger). View service details, promotions, photos, location, news updates, hours of operation and much more!

· Empower families to exchange ideas and questions. When people connect, amazing things happen. Friendi believes that technology should serve the networking needs of all individuals, not just the popular majority. Create and share posts and pictures, comment on others posts, and start conversations within minutes.

· Unites families through events and causes. Individually we are weak, but together we are strong. We open sourced our events platform so that everyone can create, promote and attend events, not just big businesses that require equally large fees.

Funding: Friendi is funded by the hundreds of service providers who show their support for individuals with special needs and their families. We could not operate without their membership and support. In exchange for their commitment, we grant them a Friendi certificate of recognition.

App Icon

I just saw this on ABC in SF and am looking forward to exploring this app. An initial request would be to change your puzzle piece logo. There is increasing opinion in the autistic community, including from adult autistics, that the puzzle piece represents a "missing piece" from them. I know it's widely used but hopefully the tide will change and we can find a better representation for them, instead of insinuating that something is missing. Thanks for your consideration

No way... not on my watch!

Something told me to hold off on registration for quite a number of weeks, now I know why. Today’s update says they have now partnered with Facebook and Meetup! When you tout an app as being a safer and better place for adults with developmental disabilities to become introduced and to ultimately meet up, you don’t integrate it with capabilities from Facebook amd Meetup, which is essentially the gutter. I originally thought this app was great because it was supposed to be private, self-contained, required somewhat of a checks and balances system to make sure you weren’t a creep off the street looking for victims. Unfortunately, too many people do not understand Facebook or Meetup settings and do not understand how to adjust privacy levels there, and there isn’t person I haven’t met yet that knew all the ins and outs of them (it’s more difficult than you think). Once this app became linked to the outside world via social media apps, it became useless because there always was the ability to create meetup groups for these same people on Facebook and Meetup — and the world certainly didn’t need this app to help them do it! I’m not comfortable at all with putting in any one picture or the private identifying information in this app, because I don’t even need to do that on a Facebook or Meetup page! I don’t have to put anything I don’t want to on those sites pages that I’m not comfortable putting out there! I just saw again for the second time another person on the local news who was using Meetup who got beat up and robbed after communicating with someone who with a group of thugs planned it from the beginning. Do we really want that happening to developmentally disabled people? I don’t! Therefore, the app is completely redundant and just a shell for regular social media activity, at least as far as the consumers who would use it are concerned. I’m sure it’s much more valuable to the developers for other reasons. Also, putting in the word “friendi” to search for this app doesn’t even show up in the App Store, but other similar sounding creepy apps do, so I think the name is a mistake to begin with. The only way to even find it is to go to the App Store and search for things you have already downloaded and find it that way. But as far as new users trying to search for an app someone tells them to download and meaning this one, it’s already a bust! Didn’t they research that by putting in a quick search before they even named it? Without a name change, they are leading developmentally disabled people up the path to mistakenly downloading the wrong app!) I highly suggest if you want large groups of people with similar interests such as this to create your own local group of friends, and hand out flyers to therapists’ offices, United Cerebral Palsy, educational institutions, and already established disability-specific groups in your area, and you can all get together in a park every so often and see who clicks with whom should you want to do one-on-ones thereafter , but at least the entire group gets to go out and have a lot of friends one way or another once in a while. You don’t need social media to be able to make local friends. People have been forming real friendships for thousands of years before Facebook and Meetup came along!

Developer Response ,

Thank you for your thoughtful review. I am sorry that Friendi has not yet met your expectations and that you are disappointed with what we have created. Let me take a minute to explain to you the reasoning behind Facebook/Meetup event fetching into Friendi. When CBS covered Friendi on their "People Doing Good" segment, we received many downloads, yet the engagement of users decreased exponentially after the initial spike in downloads. The reason for this (in my opinion) was that we did not have enough content/engagement features to keep people engaged repeatedly. Hopefully as we continue to improve Friendi, we can regain your optimism and trust. Thank you.

Wonderful app

This app is extremely easy to use and update! Although it is fairly new it works well, I believe it will be extremely useful as parents begin to use it! It took me about 7 minutes to complete profile and I already have matches for my son! Love it! Just needs to be easier to find in App Store!
