Now in addition to continued support for Garmin Speak™ with Amazon Alexa, the Drive app also allows the Garmin DriveSmart™ 55 and 65 to connect wirelessly to your phone for features such as live traffic, photoLive traffic cameras, advanced weather, live parking and smart notifications. Older Garmin navigation devices should continue to use Garmin Smartphone Link.
Garmin Speak™ with Amazon Alexa brings what you love about Amazon Alexa to your vehicle. Just ask Alexa to hear music, news and more. Also enjoy Garmin turn-by-turn navigation. Stream the audio (music and other responses) from your vehicle’s stereo when you connect Garmin Speak to your stereo using Bluetooth® or AUX.

No smart notifications.
Just purchased a new Garmin DriveSmart 55 and I really like it. Some noticeable improvements over my old Garmin Nuvi. The Garman drive app connects much better than the old app and the location search on the app works much better with the GPS unit. But for some reason after about a half a day of use the Smart Notifications quit working and I have tried everything I can think of to get them working again with no success. Garmin has offered some help but nothing very useful. Just told me to try disconnecting and reconnecting the phone to the GPS unit again. They sent me a link to an outdated connection procedure that doesn’t even match up to the present GPS software. All in all I like the app and the DriveSmart 55 but I’m really bummed that I can’t get the smart notifications working.
No way to view the camera
The app works far better since the update. However, there is no way to simply view the camera. Now you have to take a picture from the device, move the camera, then take another picture. This process is terrible. The instruction manual that I downloaded said to tap view camera. There’s no view camera feature anywhere on the app. This makes it very difficult to setup camera placement. The old app barely worked, but at least it had a feature to view the camera. Please fix this.
Works perfect with DriveSmart 55👍😊
I was not optimistic, based on reviews and my own history with Garmin’s Smart Link use on earlier model Nuvi’s I had.
So far, the app connects every time I use my newest GPS. I don’t even have to open the app, it just connects.
Text messages are displayed on map screen, though emojis do not display. Even if it is an emoji only message, I get noticed that I have a text message and informed of the sender’s ID.
Weather comes through quickly, traffic cameras display very quickly, and traffic reporting, so far, seems to be equal to my favorite, Inrix.
I have Bluetooth in my car, so I am pleased that I can turn off the mobile phone hands free feature of the Garmin DriveSmart, while retaining my text message display and other features. My car’s Bluetooth has always worked well, and Garmin has a poor history with this feature.
I am, even to my surprise, very happy with the app and my DriveSmart 55.
