Goal Streaks
Ratings & Reviews
I really like this app, but I hate that you cannot enter an "0" in the box, you just have to leave it blank. I track a lot of behaviors, activities and goals and the way it is set up now I have to have two listings for every goal, e.g. "Exercised", "Didn't Exercise" in order to have something to check off. I check off different activities at different times of the day or even the next day and I want to be definitive and make sure I just didn't forget to check something off.Not doing your goal for 3 days or a week or a month is a streak as well and having to enter an "0" instead of merely leaving it blank seems to me more motivating and definitive than just leaving the box blank.I also would like to be able to re-set and start anew if I wanted to without having to re-enter everything.I wrote the developer a year ago and he said he would make these options available or would consider doing so, but never did. I wish he would give the user that flexibility and not have it be dictated by the way the app is set up.Other than the issues I have listed above, I think this is the best streaks app, but I have to give it only a 1 star because I think consumers mostly only pay attention to the 1 and 5 star reviews and I want this long review read. I would gladly give this a 5 star review otherwise and plan to if changes are made.
...but the way this app keeps track of your "streaks" makes no sense to me. One of my goals was to exercise 4 times a week. I went to the gym Monday, missed Tue and Wed, then exercised again on Thursday. But when I marked an 'X' on Thursday the app drew a red line between Monday and Thursday and gave me credit for all 4 days. Not only does it make it impossible to mark two individual, non-consecutive days (if I wanted to mark all 4 I would've put an 'X' on each one) but it basically forces you to cheat on your scoring. This is supposed to motivate me? All I have to do is exercise once on Sunday and again on Saturday, and boom, they give me credit for a 7-day, record-breaking streak. Another example: I set up a goal to update my blog once a month, and made it clear that this was a MONTHLY goal. I marked an X on the day in December that I wrote a blog post, a month later I marked a day in January and (you guessed it) the app drew a red line between both days and gave me a streak of 29... At this point I gave up and deleted the app. Can I have my $5 back?
I like Goal Streaks. I've tried a bunch of "streak" apps and it is by far my fave. Minimalist, visual-based design and tracking. Enough customization to satisfy multiple tracking styles. But if you want to actually do anything with that data you've collected, you're out of luck. The app itself does no number crunching or data comparison, and there is no way to export one's data. The lack of data export contributes to poor performance with more than a few goals (slow, jerky scrolling). I'm forced to keep all my goals in the app unless I want to trash all that collected data. There isn't even a way to hide or archive old goals. These are huge oversights in my opinion. The developer, while pleasant and responsive, is indifferent to feature requests. I asked for data export 2 years ago, and even after a major app overhaul I was told it will be "considered". Goals Streaks is a tracker app that I would like to go all-in with, but oversights like those mentioned above are why I just keep going back to plain old spreadsheets. For the casual user tracking a few goals for fun, this app is fine. If you're looking for a robust solution, I think you'll be initially enamored but eventually the limitations will eat away at you.
At first I thought this was overpriced. Then I realized that the developer is the same one that made Focus Time, one of my all time favorite apps. They've responded personally to my requests for Focus Time and their updates were exactly what I wanted. Then I realized that if this app helps me achieve a single productive goal, it would be worth it. And it has! Once you get a good streak going, you don't want to stop. I love the control you have over alerts and the days that count towards your streak. The only thing this app is missing is syncing between iPhone and iPad, and they're working on it!
Update(August 2015):Thank you very much for the import/export. I have restored my historical data from backup and plan to resume use of this goal app. I have therefore restored my rating to 5 stars. Thanks again!! Prior Review (April 2015):I have been using this app for 2 years and had previously rated it 5 stars. I am now in need of exporting/importing the data as I need to do a clean install of my iPhone software. Therefore I am probably going to lose my data. That is a bummer. Beware of this app if you want to keep your data.
I've been looking for an app like this for years. It's very straightforward and accomplishes the simple task of setting goals and forming habits. Big bonus for the attractive design, too. It seems to "game-ify" goals to encourage users to meet them. I see it has syncing issues, but I'm just using it on my phone. My only request would to see the goal list condensed a little bit. I can only see a few goals without scrolling... feels bulky. Finally, a unique and refreshing addition to the productivity category.
