Buggy search widget on iOS 14 (fixed)

Updated my review as this issue was fixed even before the review was moderated and published 🙂

TL;DR: voice search requires two clicks and about two seconds of load time before it registers speech. This only occurs on a fresh load (e.g., when not allowing the app to run in the background). Current Behavior: I click the microphone button on the widget. Google opens on its home screen. After about a second the “tap the mic” screen auto opens. The microphone appears to be listening for about a second but doesn’t register any sound. Finally the mic button comes back at which point I can click it and speak. Expected Behavior: I click the microphone button on the widget. Google opens on the microphone screen, registers my speech and executed the search. Note: if I let Google run in the background rather than quitting the app when I’m done it works as expected. However I don’t ever leave apps running. I always quit an app when I’m done using it.

This app acts like beta version

September 2021: most recent version keeps reporting “something went wrong” on both iPad and iPhone. The app only displays a few cards and gives up. Managing interests isn’t very intuitive and it is almost impossible to stop seeing subject matter not of interest. One time I happened to read an article on record players and then for weeks the app tried dozens of times to coerce me read stuff about vinyl records even though I clicked “not interested” repeatedly. The algorithm also seems to get obsessed with certain headlines and shows cards for every conceivable plagiarized version of the same article, sometimes for days, even if you never read any of the articles suggested on the cards.

This app was a lot more user-friendly a few years ago, especially when it was easy to track stocks as well as see news article cards. The algorithm seems to have become increasing obsessive and difficult to fine tune. For example, suppose you don’t want to read articles about Chevy Corvettes, if you try to customize your interest, you may only get to choose “not interested in car” even though the card headline might be something like “GM Announces Sticker Price of New Corvette C8.” Of course, I may be interested in some cars and some stories related to cars, just not Corvettes.

Except it doesn't work ,

Would give it a 5

Update I’m upping my stars from one to two bc they resolved the issues I was having below. But, only to two because I’m pretty upset about the new “design” or whatever. Changing the location of the home and share buttons at the same time they changed their look was a very bad idea. It’s been weeks and I’m still not used to it. I automatically still try to do it the old way and then after that fails, I have to spend time trying to figure out what the icons mean so I can get where I need to go. Usually, with updates in my iPhone, the changes are so intuitive I don’t even realize that they’ve changed. Not the case here. Very frustrating. Seems like after this long it would have become ingrained, but, nope. Constant crashing or saying the Internet is down when it is not. Love using this app but it seems to be failing more and more. I am past the point of annoyance and to the point of being frustrated enough to come here and rant. I really like having the app separate from safari but I end up having to switch to safari so much that this app has not only become pointless, but adds so much time when all I want is a simple google search.
