Greenlight® helps parents raise financially-smart kids. Greenlight is a debit card for kids, teens, and college students that parents manage from their mobile phones, using powerful and flexible parental controls. As the next-generation way for parents to give money and pay allowances to their children, Greenlight is safer, easier, and more flexible than using cash. Parents can choose the exact stores where their kids can spend and how much money they can spend. Greenlight also includes an innovative Educational Savings Account that enables parents to set a Parent-Paid Savings Interest Rate to help teach their kids the importance of saving. Greenlight makes a perfect teaching tool about money because it creates natural opportunities for discussions about real money between parents and kids.

Greenlight combines an app for parents and their children with a Greenlight Mastercard® debit card for each child. Greenlight is NOT a credit card--the only funds a child can spend are those the parent loads on the card.

14 years old and I understand interest.

As an eighth grader who loves to go out with friends this is great for me. I can go to the mall on my own money and not be peer pressured to share because they cant see how much money I have on me, also Greenlight has taught me money management skills along with how to save and earn interest. I haven’t explored the “give” feature yet but I’m excited to explore it, this sounds like something I would love to tie in with my Girl Scouts.
We jumped onto Greenlight when I started sixth grade, I babysit and do odd jobs in my community to earn money so I can buy things that I want without being irksome to my mother who loves to support me in anything I do. I hate to pester her so this has been a great opportunity for me.
As a teenager I love that you can get cash at an ATM but I wish I could put money on my card by myself too, it can be a hassle to get my Mom to take the cash I’ve earned and transfer it onto my card since we usually have to go to the bank before she can put it on my card. For example, I earned several hundred dollars last month babysitting and my mom didn’t have that much in the Greenlight parent account to trade me with immediately before I went out with friends. Also, if my mom hands me say $20 before I go the the mall I would like to have the independence to put it on my debit and it automatically go to my spend anywhere account rather that have that loose cash on me.

Great Customer Service

I just signed up for Greenlight however I confused it with another service that had feature I really thought would benefit my child. I am always nervous when canceling required a phone call, because it usually includes some really pushy attempts to make you stay. My husband was on the phone with one company over two hours trying to cancel. It’s scarred us for life! (Haha)

So I braced myself and called Greenlight to cancel. After one man took my general information and then told me he was transferred me to the cancellation department, I automatically thought, oh great here we go. My defenses went up and I was ready to battle. Turns out Greenlight plans to add the feature I wanted in a couple months and was willing to give me discount in order to stay and have the opportunity to compare the two services. Being in defense mode, I wasn’t open to staying.... and I will say the guy on the phone was not remotely pushy and was super nice. The second I hung up I asked myself why I didn’t stay.

I have had so many horrible customer service experiences, especially when trying to cancel a service it actually caught me off guard to have nice genuine customer service.

Great ideas, great app!

My daughter is 11 (received her card at 10) and loves having her own debit card! The app is easy to use and functions well. I love that it reduces the likelihood of her losing cash. I do wish there were a kids version of the app she could have on her phone to keep track of her account balance without allowing the full level of access parents have to the accounts. But my biggest complaint right now is the time it takes for funds to deposit from a funding acct into the parent account. It used to be shorter and now it takes almost a full work week. We have definitely reduced use of the program for this reason as some spending decisions are made in a smaller time frame and there isn’t time to wait for the slow funding process. There have also been times when my child was on a field trip and did not have enough money for something, but I could not add money directly to her account unless it was already in my parents account. Funding it from my bank at that time to my parents account would’ve taken days when I only had minutes. In those situations she had to go without, because I was not present and the process takes too long. Please change this back to the immediate funds access you used to have.

Hi! Thank you for reaching out and sharing your feedback. First let us say, we are so excited to have you in the Greenlight Family. We have some great news for you as well, there is a kids version of the app. You can enable app usage for her by going to your Greenlight Dashboard, tapping on her account, then tapping the settings gear in the top right corner. This will then let you enter her phone number, which will send her a text with a link to download the kids version of the Greenlight app. Additionally, you can now make instant transfers through Greenlight when you use our new method of logging in directly to your banking provider within the Greenlight app. If you'd like any assistance setting up either of these in your app, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at
