Lots to Love But Seems Orphaned
Pros: great sound. Lots of toys! And when I show my guitarist friends the secondary-chords feature, their eyes pop.
Cons: Could really use full CAGED-system support for playing chords in other than first position. You can get part of the way there with the transpose feature, but but I don’t think most of us can make it work on the fly. So you can't, e.g., do a live riff that starts with second-position E and ends with first-position E. Also, without scales implemented it’s not as suitable for playing lead as the GarageBand smart guitars, even though they have a more limited sonic palette.
The two things above stem from the bigger worry about this app: it seems moribund. There have been no major upgrades in functionality for two years now, as of late 2017. I do see the developer is releasing a flurry of bug fixes lately, so maybe things will start moving again. I’d be perfectly happy to pay for CAGED chords and scales as in-app purchases.
This program is great fun, and is good for rock, but the lack of higher voiced chords, like 13ths and 11ths, limits its jazz usefulness.
Also, I can find no way to control which inversion of the chord is to be played.
Finally, the limit of 6 chords is a bit stifling.
However, the guitars sound great and play great. Even with the above limitations the program is worth the investment. Using Guitarism to control other programs is reason enough to buy - I have made some wicked sounds.
Make the program a little more flexible, and this app is 5-star all the way.
Beautiful sound, feature requests
I love this app! There are only a few decent guitar simulator apps in the iTunes Store, and this one is tied, in my opinion, with iShred. guitarism sounds better, and supports iPad - iShred works on iPad, but only at iPhone resolution. There are two features that iShred has that Guitarism does not, so I want to request those features and this would get a hearty five stars from me. 1) Add a fretboard mode, so you can pick out individual notes. Having a bend feature and hammer-ons, are essential. 2) Create a mute pad somewhere, so that instead of enabling fret-muting globally, you could just tap a spot on the body of the guitar to mute just when you want it. My third request is a bug - not sure how widespread it is, but this app won't play audio at all through my Bluetooth headphones. Strangely, both Guitarism and iShred both won't play through Bluetooth, so whatever the problem is, is common to both. IShred hasn't been updated in years, so I'm planning on building a new relationship with Guitarism as my PRIMARY guitar app for both iPhone and iPad. Thank you for building a WONDERFUL app, and I look forward to your future updates.
