Half uses state-of-the art compression when available to drastically reduce the size of your media.

On average, Half can reduce photo file sizes by ½. For typical photos, especially for screenshots and PNGs, it tends to give an even better savings. For videos, it works best on those of higher resolution such as 4K.

Half uses High Efficiency Image Format (HEIF/HEIC) and High Efficiency Video Compression (HEVC), modern compression codecs.

Does what it claims, has much promise

Half does reduce file size significantly, but using it can be a real chore.😪

I’m only able to convert a single file at a time. For an app like this, it seems batch processing would be the preferred workflow and handling each photo individually is a lot of unnecessary work.

Half doesn’t recognize that a file which has already been converted to HEIC, is well converted to HEIC. Halved images continue to show as JPEG within the app.😅 That just makes it confusing as I continue to dig for more photos to convert, have I already converted this one? Uhhh not sure 🤔

ProCam (another app I have) does report the newly halved Photos as HEIC correctly. Maybe add two options like don’t show/don’t halve HEIC Photos in Half? That would be nice.

Attempting to half an already halved photo can grow it’s size. Perhaps an option to not convert if new size may exceed current size? 🤔

It would also be nice if it worked for videos as well, hopefully in a future update 😊

3/5 due to being a chore to use. But, easily a 5 star app if I could breeze though my photo library!

It would also be nice if I could select the destination album, preferably per batch or by setting a default as an option. 😇

It’s also worth noting that going to App Support from the AppStore page takes me to a site that says “UserVoice sub domain is unavailable.” Maybe, that isn’t the best customer experience?

Can you help us out Dev? 😄

Developer Response ,

The support site is It was switched over, and the App Store link may not have propagated. Would love more info on why you're not seeing Halved images as such. It should lock you out of re-Halving, plus have a badge of "JPEG" or "PNG" for non-Halved images. Are you using 1.02? Definitely never seen this bug.

Usage and Quality/Bitrate

Nice for a few photos; and, nicely designed to do so, but converting many or a batch, this isn’t the app for that. It would also be nice if the image was replaced in your photo timeline, not have a new HEIF made at the end of Photos that appear as new, with (if you delete the JPEG) an image lost in time.

I’d also love if the developer could tell me how they are determining the compression picked in the HEIC in that it will generate an image equal in quality to that of the JPEG. Is there a “smart” bitrate applied to the HEIF (based on analysis of the JPEG) or is it some “standard” bitrate where you can get the savings, but ensure quality (even if it’s at cost to the optimal bitrate being applied to the HEIF?) Quality is paramount to me, and assume to all users of this solution.

Fantastic and worth it... soon

The app is dead simple in premise: convert your JPEGs and PNGs to the new high efficiency format Apple is standardizing (HEIC and HEVC), and optionally delete the now-oversized originals, all without losing any noticeable quality. That alone is worth skipping 1 WHOPPING CUP OF COFFEE in order to get you back nearly half of the space taken up by your photo library. So that's it..... Now the bad stuff:

There is no batch editing YET, no burst photo conversion YET, no live photo conversion YET, and no video conversion YET! However, these are all features that will be made available in a future update, and THEN this app becomes worth about TWO WHOPPING CUPS OF COFFEE in my opinion!

Long-short: buy this app to save you space, data, and time IF you don't have a Mac to convert your photo library with.
