Lack of Content/Original Programming at Launch/No Direct Smart TV Application Offered
I was initially excited to see what would all be offered in WarnerMedia’s latest streaming venture with many of their subsidiaries being on a single platform among with original programming and hopeful that it would be readily-integrated for smart TVs by app at launch, but after a week of subscribing to it, I’m somewhat upset with the rollout and minimal amount of original programming offered within the service’s first month. When it comes to the offering, it was promised there would be something for everybody on this platform, and ultimately, they, too, are bare minimum in categories—especially for kids.
Content aside—as I assume more will be integrated as time goes by—I cannot stress that the lack of having readied smart TV manufacturers to distribute the HBO Max app in order to stream this service is a massive misstep I sincerely hope is being rectified; I have been constantly AirPlaying via iPhone and iPad to watch shows and movies on the big screen…only for it to crash and/or stall auto-playing episodes of TV programs when all I want to do is binge-watch my favorites.
I understand that application launches are not without bugs, glitches, and overlooked issues, but WarnerMedia has been in the streaming service game with HBO Go, the now-retired HBO Now, and aspects of DC Universe, so there really isn’t excuse for this service to be this unprepared for televisual viewing.
I’m so excited to be able to stream Friends again, and I’m happy with the title selection they offer. I’m giving 3 stars because the app itself has been giving me issues. ( For reference, I watch on Toshiba with Chromecast built in) I watch with the subtitles and, consistently and repeatedly, when a second episode begins it will show subtitles for the current episode jumbled up with subtitles for a previous episode. I have been fixing it by disconnecting, close/reopen app, and reconnect, but now that isn’t even fixing it. Also, when a new episode starts, after about 15 seconds, the sound doesn’t align with the video and it does this little fast forward but that just makes the sound/visual even more jumbled. (This has been true for all TV shows, and I have to disconnect/reconnect) Beyond that, for some reason today, I could not get the app to stream video. I was able to move about the app, but when I tried to watch something, all I got was a frozen black screen. I tried to stream from my husband’s phone, and we had the same issue. I hope this bugs get fixed soon.
Problematic right now, but great potential.
First things first: I love the content on here. On the content only, I give it 5 stars.
However, the interface (which is still better then HBO GO or NOW) is weird. I have been watching a lot of stuff on here, and I have yet to notice any recommendations tailored towards me. If they are there, they aren’t even noticeable. When I open it, it gives me the Featured TV and Movies, and not things they think I would like.
My second complaint about the interface is that, say I want to watch a horror movie. I go to the menu and scroll down to Horror. Instead of things being in groups and sectioned out, it’s just one big list, and you have to scroll A-Z to see the options. This is annoying as hell, because I don’t know what I want to see, and looking through Horror movies A-Z is annoying. (again, recommendations would help!!). While we are talking about A-Z, on the phone, you can only see 4 movies at once (2 per row, and you can see 2 rows). They need to make it easier for you to see more at once.
Overall, I recommend getting it (I have been enjoying Doom Patrol!!), it’s a really nice streaming service, even if the ghosts of HBO Now haunt the interface.
EDIT: I have found the recommended section in the search tab (why there??), but it only has 4 movies and 4 TV shows (and I have seen one of the movies, but it’s still there...). Come on HBO, you can do better then that.
