Heads on Display

Perfect for creators who find themselves working on multiple versions of one or more projects at a time – and for those who work on version-controlled projects with tools that don't always give clear views into the repos (e.g., graphic design, 3d modeling or office-based software, perhaps?).

No matter what you're doing at any moment in your workflow, Heads On Display keeps your selected git repo's current branch name on the menu bar at all times – and provides one-click access to an unlimited number of other local working directories, too!

• Simply drag one or more existing working directories up to its icon, and your current head is displayed at the top of the list!

• Switch the view to any other repo with a single click!

• Adjust the menu order within the app's Preferences panel.

• Quickly drag one or more repos in and out of the list from here, too.

• Bonus: Open a selected projects' root folder in Finder with a simple alt-click of its title (giving you instant access to your source code as a bonus).

But wait, there's more:

Want to customize the menu with your own project icons and titles?

By creating an optional, hidden ".heads" folder at the top level of your project, you can customize and share exactly how your repo is displayed -- making it even easier for you to spot projects in the list of monitored directories. And because these settings are file-based, they can be stored along with the rest of your git repository, making it easy to share your custom settings with the rest of your team -- without interrupting their workflow, either. Of course, you can always add these files to the .ignore file, too, if you want to keep this coolness to yourself). (Note that this customization is entirely optional, and Heads On Display itself adds no new files to your project on its own).

To add a custom icon, simply include a 72x72 pixel PNG file (or any size -- the image will be automatically scaled to fit) named "icon.png" within the hidden ".heads" top-level project directory, and voila – instant artwork! (And if you want to change the default name shown within the UI, simply add a new title to a separate file name "title.txt" within the same directory).

For instance:

Heads on Display works independently of your favorite IDE, editor, etc., providing your current git repository's branch info on the status bar of either OS X (10.11 and up) and macOS.

It fully supports Mac App sandboxing while providing global shortcut-key access, launch-on-login convenience and minimal power, CPU and memory requirements. And because its packaged as a Universal app, it runs natively on both Intel and Apple Silicon (M1) macs.

In short, it's made to stay out of your way while improving every workflow -- for developers, by developers.
