HearMe during Quarantine
I found this app during quarantine and I absolutely love it. Sometimes there can be a bit of a wait, maybe a minute or two. Other than that, this app is amazing to just vent have somebody to listen to your problems and not judge you. They give amazing suggestions and they’re open minded. You have to follow all of the rules and boundaries but that is only in place to protect you and the listener. I believe everyone should use this app even to talk about small issues in your life to the major issues in your life. And when you need it they provide the appropriate resources to help with where they cannot. Please just give this a try, you will not regret it. Everyone has something going on these days, especially with quarantine, winter in February, natural disasters and financial crisis please give this a try.
A Real Life Essential
HearMe has been an absolute life changing experience. I don’t know that I would have managed to come through the pandemic shutdown and the loss of so many things I had taken for granted without it. No matter the issue or the amount of space needed, there was someone available whenever I needed; and quickly. The listeners are thoughtful, compassionate and empathetic; all without it feeling weird or robotic. More like an old friend who genuinely wants to speak a while.
Thank you HearMe! After using the app for the last year, I am in the process of becoming a listener myself! I want to be able to give and help to those like myself who just need an ear for a bit without the fear of being shamed for it.
Every social and mental health professional friend I’ve told about this app has immediately said it sounds dangerous and they kind of can’t believe it exists. I am baffled by their “move fast and break things” tech approach to a concept that gets this reaction from professionals who have training in how to avoid crisis situations.
As a listener, I spoke to someone brought to the edge of suicide by a conversation with another listener on the app and ended up calling the national suicide hotline for guidance because there were 0 resources available to me on how to exit the conversation safely. I also saw other listeners asking for help in how to deal with violent crisis situations and not getting any response at all.
When I brought this to the attention of the whole team, they were “sorry I felt that way” but had nothing to say about actual steps to mitigate this kind of damage.
I appreciate that they have good intentions in creating a chat app, but many people who are drawn to this app are having real issues and cannot access real therapy, and they haven’t given this fact enough thought or action to address it. I know many people who are casual users have had good experiences, and that’s wonderful, but the lives of the outliers matter, too. Mental health is too important to be left to people with good intentions and not extensive training in social work.
