Description

A fast and clever hex editor built just for the Mac

Hex Fiend is a fast, lean, and powerful hex editor built just for the Mac.

- Insert, delete, rearrange. Hex Fiend does not limit you to in-place changes like some hex editors.

- Work with huge files. Hex Fiend can handle as big a file as you’re able to create.

- Small footprint. Hex Fiend does not keep your files in memory. You won’t dread launching or working with Hex Fiend even on low-RAM machines.

- Fast. Open a huge file, scroll around, copy and paste, all instantly. Find what you’re looking for with fast searching.

- Binary diff. Hex Fiend can show the differences between files, taking into account insertions or deletions.

- Smart saving. Hex Fiend knows not to waste time overwriting the parts of your files that haven’t changed, and never needs temporary disk space.

Saved me years of data.

I have a crucial numbers file with 13 years of data and which I had not backed up in 2 years (yes that was really stupid on my part) - and recently my computer crashed while in the spread sheet. It corrupted the file to where no program could open it. I tried online conversions - I tried everything - even trying to hire some to save it. After a week of non stop trying to fix it, Today I discovered Hex Fiend and I was able to access the file - fix the corruption and get my data back (I now have multiple copeis of the file and will be backing up religiously on a daily basis from now on). Thanks to the dev(s) of Hex Fiend - you saved my bacon.

Excellent

I am reviewing version 2.14.1 (available on the Hex Fiend web site) running on Monterey. This is a *great* tool. Currently I use it more for for examining files than for editing. For me the most interesting feature is the binary template feature to overlay the file contents with structure. I've been using it to learn about Bitcoin blockchain structure examining Bitcoin Core blockchain files. The feature implements a Tcl interface. (Yeah, I know, there are plenty of tools around to examine the BTC block chain.) The UI is mature and clean compared to some other free editors I've used. Highly recommended.

Indispensable Hex Editor for Forensics

HexFiend has been an indispensable tool for me for years now, and its value has only increased since I'm involved in more forensics work as of late. This open-source hex editor for macOS impresses with its speed and versatility. It effortlessly handles even massive 30 GB files, a feat that's crucial in forensic investigations, and without excessive memory use. One of its standout features are binary templates, which make it easy to see file structure. Whether dissecting file systems or uncovering hidden data, HexFiend remains my go-to! Many thanks to the developers.
