Good app, annoying bugs

I really do think this is superior to FD, which is what I switched from. The problems arise when converting FD documents to highland and vise versa. For example, in FD, you might have written something like, “John’s” and when you convert to Highland it will look like “John**s.” There are weird bugs like this that you need to deal with that ultimately translates to more work in the editing process. However, most of these are mitigated when writing a script natively in Highland. I just really want the developers to drill down and work out all these bugs, especially since they moved to a subscription model. If you are going to be collaborating with others who use FD, I’m not sure I can recommend this as you will most likely run into these annoying issues. If you work solo and prefer what is admittedly an easier and more streamlined formatting process, you may enjoy this a lot. My next script will be written fully in Highland and then I’ll really decide if I’m going to stick with this app or move back. The last one was half-written in FD and then completed in Highland, and that was a bit of a pain.

It's become an essential part of my writing process, and the scripts I've created with it are all the better for it. If you're looking to rediscover the joy of just writing, Highland is the companion you need.

Excellent software from responsive developers. I’ve got to call out the low star reviews based on the subscription price. Those are not helpful to people looking at reviews of software. If you don’t want to pay, or don’t like subscriptions, don’t buy it. Sure, mention you are unwilling to pay subscriptions. But that has nothing to do with the software, and what people are interested in when looking at reviews, is how well does the software work. It’s up to each user to decided if they can afford it, or are willing to pay. This software works really well. It works for all types of writing, but for screenwriting uses regular text documents that can be opened on any text editor and formats it look like a screenplay using the Fountain markup formatting.

If you don’t want to pay, or don’t like subscriptions, don’t buy it. Sure, mention you are unwilling to pay subscriptions. But that has nothing to do with the software, and what people are interested in when looking at reviews, is how well does the software work. It’s up to each user to decided if they can afford it, or are willing to pay. This software works really well. It works for all types of writing, but for screenwriting uses regular text documents that can be opened on any text editor and formats it look like a screenplay using the Fountain markup formatting.

I was an “early adopter” of Highland. I had used Final Draft and others and I was delighted by Highland, and subsequently, Highland 2. I recommended it all the time and introduced my students to it. It has the nice compatible features in file formats between XML based files and Final Draft’s format, and it worked pretty well.The new version has moved more or less the same functionality in Highland 2 to Highland Pro and switching to the subscription model. For most of us, this is just way over the line. I had an introductory free version of Pro and found that it didn’t have any number of features that weren’t in Highland 2. Even so, I would have happily paid a small subscription fee to keep the place running. But, $60 per year is way over the line, guys, even with now 50% for the first year. It should be no more than $25/year, IMO. There is too much competition to compete at a higher price.Lucky for me, I still have Highland 2 and I will guard my installation carefully.
