Clever Puzzle Game

Hinges is a clever puzzle game that is clean and simple in its design even as it builds in complexity. It is well paced and rewards thoughtful engagement. And it allows for a satisfying conclusion after a couple of hours (in my case) of effort. I hope to see more apps from this developer!

No instructions.

I love puzzle games, and this one obviously requires rotating blocks to form a particular shape.

But there are cryptic markings on the blocks. What do they mean? Who knows — because there are no instructions.

(At least I haven't been able to find any. I've tapped on everything I see, but NOTHING brings up any kind of settings or tutorial.)

What's the difference between "normal" and "free" play? Who knows — because there are no instructions.

As I tap and drag, additional lines and markings appear. What do they mean? Who knows — because there are no instructions.

What do the circles and portions of circled at the lower left mean? Who knows — because there are no instructions.

Sometimes the white background turns beige. What does that mean? Who knows — because there are no instructions.

Occasionally after a block is moved, the word "bonus" appears, even though the puzzle doesn't appear to be complete. So, why is a "bonus" being awarded? What does that mean? Who knows — because there are no instructions.

How can you spend time to design a unique game, yet not include ONE WORD of explanation about how the game is played?

How utterly ridiculous.

Developer Response ,

Thanks for giving it a go and sorry you had a bad time. I appreciate that you took the time to write in.

I’ll take a look at setting better expectations in the game description. There are certain elements of discovery, e.g. ~puzzling~ out what the markings mean, that I’d like to be part of playing the game, but I understand how this could be frustrating and confusing (in a bad way) if the gameplay is described as it is now: as being just about moving blocks.

It’s ok

It’s good at first, but it doesn’t save your progress, when you lose, which I’m not sure whether taking too many steps, turns, whatever, maybe give a spot where you can have a clue button, or a backspace buttons when you make a wrong turn. But the thing right that is the worst, is if you get to the 3rd set of plays, and then you lose, have to start all over again. That alone is ready to make me delete this game. No instructions on what to do

Developer Response ,

Hi kaw11764, thanks for playing, rating and writing!
If you you tap the top-left button, the menu includes an option to reset to beginning of the specific level you're on. Your move counter will also be reset to what it was when you began the level. Through the same top left menu you can also start a new game in 'free play' mode with no move counter.
