We love our grid on Kauai and it is very reassuring to have a reliable generator. I also like the convenience of being able to start it via Bluetooth from my phone and also check on stats. We had previously purchased two separate generators from Costco. They were well worth the money because they were a lot less expensive, but I feel safer for my family having a really good solid Honda generator now.
This generator was purchased in 2023! I used it once, and then stored it! Now in January of 2026, I started the generator again, thinking I would need a few pulls to get it going! To my great surprise, it started on the first pull! The gasoline, which was still inside the tank, was also from 2023 (it did contain stabilizer fluid). The generator runs just fine and I couldn’t be happier! Way to go Honda for making quality products!
This is probably the coolest app I’ve ever used anybody could use it. It is so informative and helpful while trying to figure out what you can and cannot run in your house. I’m definitely gonna have my wife download the same app in case I’m not around when we lose power.
I had a hard time with the app at first cause my generator was already running and I could not get it to connect. You need to connect the app to the generator within the first 30 seconds after starting the gen. Mine was already started and I could not shut it down as I was using it to power a kiln for jewelry casting and shutting down was not an option. But once the casting was finished and I shut down and restarted generator it connected with ease and seems after that initial set up it connects anytime to the generator even when I open app well past the initial 30 seaconds after start up. So while initially frustrated I am now very happy. Just be sure to do the first setup ASAP so you will be good anytime after that.Only thing that would be nice is if the app could let you know how much gas is left in tank. I did not see where I can monitor that but boy would it be nice if it did mostly if you are in a situation like me an worried that the Honda might run out of gas in the middle of when you don’t want it to 👍
Once you set it up, it automatically connects with your phone as long as the phone is in range. The maintenance features work. They can be annoying, but they work. 100 hours for oil life? My car oil has a 6,000 mile life. My semi-truck has an oil life of 50,000. The point being, the maintenance reminders are preset, unadjustable, and can be annoying. The rpm display is very useful. It allows you to measure the usage of devices as you turn them off and on; track battery charging, etc.The Bluetooth option to turn the generator off from a distance is extremely useful! But, why in the name of all that is holy isn’t there a timer???? I use this on my semi-truck to reduce idling. It can charge my 4 large truck batteries in 2-4 hours. It easily keeps up with hotel drains: fridge, lights, diesel bunk heater. It does not power the microwave (kind of annoying).I think the problem there is that the generator senses the load and ramps up the rpm(s) until it redlines, then cuts off. It should just go to max rpm(s) and hold. My trucks battery bank, my inverter, and my microwave set at 70% should work (it has worked in previous applications). But, the generator just revs up and cuts back.Very good. Not perfect.
Purchased our generator roughly 11 months ago from our local Honda dealership and now have 25 hours on it. Although limited use at this point it came in very handy during a storm that we experienced a couple months back where we lost power for two days. It’s extremely quiet and efficient on fuel (9hr at about 50%) and the maintenance such as oil changes are user-friendly. The controls are very simple to use. I also love the Honda generator app which reminds me of routine maintenance and can also let you know either amperage or wattage draw so that you can stagger what you run when using it for backup power. It does have a limited range of 75 feet since it works off of Bluetooth. I find it just placing my phone on the windowsill while the generator is on the deck works well. It is nice that you can shut the generator off by using your phone to let it cool down before bringing it in or refueling it. The eco-throttle is a fantastic feature as well.My wife and I purchased this unit as it was something better for our sensitive electronic equipment and the controls are easier to operate than our Honda jobsite generator that has well over 1000 hrs on it. At roughly 50 pounds (47 pounds dry) or so it’s also a simple one-handed grab and go and it can be running and in use very quickly. Since it is better on fuel it also conserves what often is a limited resource during power outages. It has roughly triple the run time per gallon from what I’m used to. It is what you would expect from a Honda product. Just make sure your fuel is fresh and you are proactive with maintenance and it will serve you well. I’ve been using non-ethanol fuel (E-0) quite a few years now and it has greatly reduced carburetor service for all jobsite and personal power equipment at home. Thinking about purchasing another one for parallel capability and to keep at my moms house.Daryl Fairport, N.Y.
