Description

“Hopscotch is the best way to express your imagination! Most other "learn to code" apps just make you complete boring levels with 4 "move" blocks, but in hopscotch you have the freedom to create anything, which is amazing.” — BuildASnowman, Hopscotcher

“This taught me sooooo much about basics of coding. I have been able to make some cool games I hope to learn more as I advance this app was extremely helpful and easy to learn.” — BestBeginnersCoding, Hopcotcher

“I had ZERO background or programming experience. I personally checked all 8 or 10 of these blogs about recommendations. And Hopscotch was the most intuitive and interactive. It’s not like you’re just playing video games. My daughter loves it!” — Mom, S. to daughter, 8

“I am a 4th grade teacher who LOVES your app. Our students have been introduced to coding through it and I am impressed with the creativity they have shown and the skills they are building while creating projects.” — Kelley, 4th grade teacher

Great app!!

This app was my first step into the coding world when I was young! I love hopscotch and it truly has encouraged me to learn other coding languages and get involved with programming. I can confidently say that hopscotch not only teaches you about coding, but it teaches kids problem solving, applying math and logic skills, perseverance, patience and so much more. I always loved spending summer days coding games and then being able to publish these games for other kids to play! This is definitely a great app for kids of all ages and all coding skill levels. Wether or not your child wants to be a professional game developer, this app will benefit them in so many ways and teach them so many important skills.

As for the people who dislike the subscription, you can still use hopscotch for free! The subscription is optional and gives you access to more features, but there is still a fully functional free version. Personally, I think the subscription was worth it and purchasing one helps support the team behind this amazing app!

Thanks for your kind words!  We’ve always wanted Hopscotch to be a great first step in kids journey to perhaps becoming full developers themselves, especially those who might not have started without something that made those first steps more fun. Ana

Awesome app! A few suggestions.

I tend to have at least 3 hours a day on this app. I love the fact there aren’t too many tutorials and that it encourages people to figure it out themselves. There are so many great tools such as variables, “check once if,” and music. Although this app has so many options to create pretty much any game you would want, there is one problem… the reason I downloaded this app in the first place. The shark tank interview. As said in the demonstration, kids were encouraged to make money, through seeds, but instead, kids are only losing money. (If they want the subscription.) I know that the old system will not be added, but I would ask that you would take into consideration adding a comment section to each game. This would help kids to learn by having others give suggestions on how to improve. This would also allow a sense of community to develop around a developer or their game. Two more things, the ability to see the version history of a published game and a sequel system to create direct sequels to a past game you’ve created. So that’s pretty much it. I hope that you guys at least take one of these things into consideration and turn my 4 star review into 5 stars once again. Thanks for reading!

Somewhat disappointed...

I’m a bit conflicted about Hopscotch. I do have fond memories spending hours coding and making games, but I don’t really like how it is now. The “Newest” tab isn’t the way it used to be. It only shows select things and that makes me wonder how smaller game makers are supposed to get noticed? I have been featured a few times now, but when I was first starting out it made me really happy to just have one person like it. I really liked Hopscotch, but I just wish that the tabs could go back to the way they used to be. The chance that my project might never be seen doesn’t make me feel motivated enough to start coding. I am also disappointed that you have to sign up for a free trial, or as a student or teacher. This new way of signing up for the app is really confusing, and my friend just decided not to get it. I think that the app should just start off being free, and if the user really wants the premium features they could choose to subscribe.

Edit: So I have been on Hopscotch some more and I now really miss old hopscotch. The new tabs are terrible. They make me physically nauseous. Only the projects that already get likes will ever be seen. It seems almost impossible to get featured. Why do I even try.

Réponse du développeur ,

Hi there, thank you for your feedback. We changed the tabs because we created Hopscotch so kids can learn how to code, not to compete with each other for likes. This is an educational app, and the new channels reflect what's possible to create with Hopscotch. You and your followers can always see your published projects on your home page. You can also share your games through a link with your family and friends. Also, it’s super important to us that we’re giving as many kids as possible the ability to learn to code - part of this is allowing people to use the free version, but another part is earning the money that pays our bills and allows us to add the next set of amazing features which will allow even more kids to benefit.  Our subscriptions are currently the best way to do this. We hope you keep on Hopscotching!
