“Hopscotch is the best way to express your imagination! Most other "learn to code" apps just make you complete boring levels with 4 "move" blocks, but in hopscotch you have the freedom to create anything, which is amazing.” — BuildASnowman, Hopscotcher

“This taught me sooooo much about basics of coding. I have been able to make some cool games I hope to learn more as I advance this app was extremely helpful and easy to learn.” — BestBeginnersCoding, Hopcotcher

“I had ZERO background or programming experience. I personally checked all 8 or 10 of these blogs about recommendations. And Hopscotch was the most intuitive and interactive. It’s not like you’re just playing video games. My daughter loves it!” — Mom, S. to daughter, 8

“I am a 4th grade teacher who LOVES your app. Our students have been introduced to coding through it and I am impressed with the creativity they have shown and the skills they are building while creating projects.” — Kelley, 4th grade teacher

What’s New

Version 3.47.1

Get ready, Hopscotchers. This version includes a brand new feature you’re going to love!

All Hopscotchers now have access to the all-new Open Project block. Now, you can link from your project to ANY other Hopscotch project in the community. Use this block to create curated lists of your favorite projects, give shout-outs to projects that inspired yours, collaborate with friends to make multi-level games, and more!

Start by finding a project you want to link to. Tap the ‘link’ icon on the project card to copy the project’s URL, then go to your code editor. Look for the Open Project block in the Control section of the editor keyboard, then drag and drop it into your code. Tap the empty field in the block, then paste in the URL. When the block executes, it will open the specified project in play mode.

We can’t wait to see what you create!

Bug fixes in this version include:

- Classroom subscribers were getting stuck on the account creation screen when starting up the app. Now, they’ll be able to go right into the app.
- When you update or re-publish a project in a hashtag channel, the project would display multiple times in the feed. Now, it’ll only display once, at the time of the most recent update.
- Numbers weren’t getting rounded when they were added to text strings. Now, they’ll be rounded to 6 decimal places.

Editors’ Choice

“Coding” may sound a bit dry and daunting to some newcomers, but those are the last things that come to mind while using Hopscotch. The app lets you have as much fun making games as playing them, and with its colorful, friendly interface and stacks of help and tutorials, kids (and grown-ups!) can build all kinds of apps—while learning the fundamentals of programming. Best of all, you can share your creations so anyone with an iPhone or iPad can play them too!

Amazing app

I’ve been using hopscotch for years. It’s an amazing app for new beginners, but even the best apps have flaws.
I don’t quite understand the “newest” tab. It used to be the actual newest projects being posted, but it doesn’t seem like that anymore.
Also, I like to look back at my old coded projects and see how I’ve improved, and exactly how long ago that was, but I can’t tell anymore with the date being gone. I am seeing that a lot of people don’t like the fact that the dates are gone. It’s making things a little confusing for a lot of people. I’m fine with the mushrooms being there, but now the date is nowhere to be seen. If possible, it would be nice to have somewhere on the project that we can see the date the person posted it.

Other than those small issues, this app is fantastic!

Hi there, thank you for your feedback! The newest channel was changed because we want to make sure that we do our best job at moderating all the projects and keeping the community safe and fun. Have you checked our new channel "Rising?" It has more new games in it!

Somewhat disappointed...

I’m a bit conflicted about Hopscotch. I do have fond memories spending hours coding and making games, but I don’t really like how it is now. The “Newest” tab isn’t the way it used to be. It only shows select things and that makes me wonder how smaller game makers are supposed to get noticed? I have been featured a few times now, but when I was first starting out it made me really happy to just have one person like it. I really liked Hopscotch, but I just wish that the tabs could go back to the way they used to be. The chance that my project might never be seen doesn’t make me feel motivated enough to start coding. I am also disappointed that you have to sign up for a free trial, or as a student or teacher. This new way of signing up for the app is really confusing, and my friend just decided not to get it. I think that the app should just start off being free, and if the user really wants the premium features they could choose to subscribe.

Edit: So I have been on Hopscotch some more and I now really miss old hopscotch. The new tabs are terrible. They make me physically nauseous. Only the projects that already get likes will ever be seen. It seems almost impossible to get featured. Why do I even try.

Developer Response ,

Hi there, thank you for your feedback. We changed the tabs because we created Hopscotch so kids can learn how to code, not to compete with each other for likes. This is an educational app, and the new channels reflect what's possible to create with Hopscotch. You and your followers can always see your published projects on your home page. You can also share your games through a link with your family and friends. Also, it’s super important to us that we’re giving as many kids as possible the ability to learn to code - part of this is allowing people to use the free version, but another part is earning the money that pays our bills and allows us to add the next set of amazing features which will allow even more kids to benefit.  Our subscriptions are currently the best way to do this. We hope you keep on Hopscotching!
