How Long Left helps you manage your time by displaying a countdown for your current and upcoming calendar events in the menu bar. You can easily configure which events are shown in the status item, and quickly access a summary of your upcoming events by simply clicking. The app also includes a range of extra features, including:
- The ability to quickly access information about your current and upcoming events.
- A Widget (Requires macOS 11.0+ and an in-app purchase)
- Time based event notifications, customizable with an in-app purchase.
...plus much more, that, honestly, I just can't be bothered to write a description for right now.
How Long Left 4.1.1 fixes an issue where setting a nickname for an event would duplicate it.
This release includes native support for Apple Silicon Macs, as well as support for macOS Big Sur. It also includes a brand new set of Widgets you can add to your Notification Centre by purchasing How Long Left Pro.
Here's a full list of changes:
- Added support for macOS Big Sur.
- Updated the design of the Preferences window in Big Sur.
- Added support for the ARM based processors in Apple Silicon Macs by compiling the app as a Universal Binary.
- Added a new set of Widgets based on the WidgetKit framework included in macOS Big Sur.
- Fixed an issue where the app would always display times in 12 hour time.
- Fixed an issue where an event status item would still be displayed after hiding its event.
- Fixed several rare crashes.
- More small bug fixes and improvements.

Its good for what it does, but it doesn’t do what I want.
The name is “How Long Left" and that’s exactly what it shows and its free, so I can’t complain. I was hoping it could show "How Long Until” so I could easily see how long until my next event, but it doesn’t do that. Perhaps an upgrade could add that capability.

Yes, you're right. The main functionality of the app is to count down how long left. But the latest update has added the ability to show a countdown to the next upcoming calendar event in the status item – for now only as long as it starts within the next week. Current events are still prioritized by default, but you can disable this in Preferences.
Just what I wanted, done exactly how I'd hoped
The name could not explain it better. Does exactly what I wanted it to do, does it quietly in the menu bar, and the iOS version does it nicely on the phone and magnificently on the watch as well. When there are no events currently ongoing, it shows a countdown to what's up next. Perfect for focusing on one event at a time.
Importantly, it also doesn't do more than it needs to just for the sake of doing it. I wish more apps stayed focused on their objective like this one does. Too many programs want to be your entire productivity suite when I all need is a nice little app that counts down some time like this one does.
Plus the developer seems very nice .(I've never met him but his update notes are quite friendly.) Thank you Ryan!
One of my favorite apps, hands down...just one thing missing!
I absolutely love How Long Left. As a busy student, the app gives me a great way to visiualize my time and how its being used. I also love the ability to see when my next event is quickly-- I don't have to open my calendar just for one event. It's all right there!
My only complaint is that I wish there was a function to shut off the notification that appears when a new event starts. Other than that, I really feel the app does its job amazingly. Thank you Ryan!

Thank you so much for the review! It really means a lot to hear that people find How Long Left useful. It's so weird and cool to have people from all over the world use something I made!
Sorry about not having the option to disable event start notifications. I've added it in now, so expect that in the next update. And again, thanks for your review!
