Pure Piano is a professional, multi-sampled concert grand piano with a unique Morph Pad that allows you to explore a multitude of sounds ranging from mellow and intimate tones to surreal, cinematic textures.

Similar to an XY pad in its flat, tactile nature, the Morph Pad offers up nine different core timbres of the piano including percussive, cinematic, bright, and intimate, to name a few. The “pure” piano sits untouched at the heart and center of the space, surrounded by eight more presets for you to explore as you guide your finger seamlessly through the wide-ranging tonal palette of the piano. As you do so, the various timbres blend together allowing you to create your own sounds comprising combinations of neighboring presets for you to save and recall. It doesn’t stop there either. The Morph Pad is linked to the app’s inbuilt EQ, reverb, and delay and so operates as a macro control adding even more to the experience by way of ever-changing texture and atmosphere, all from just one single piano.

Pure Piano works as a standalone app or as an AUv3 plug-in within your DAW of choice, and extensive connectivity options allow you to connect to your keyboard controller with ease via USB, direct, or Bluetooth MIDI to experience the sound of a professional grand piano through your headphones or speakers. The app also supports direct connection to your Mac using Inter Device Audio (IDAM). This enables you to easily integrate Pure Piano into your desktop projects by sending MIDI and receiving audio with one single cable, as well as network MIDI and Inter-App Audio for triggering the piano from other apps that you might have installed.

Equipped with customizable reverb, EQ, and delay, sound creation becomes even more creative. Simply unlink any of the audio effects from the Morph Pad to dial in your own settings. Maybe you want to add a long reverb tail to add some extra atmosphere, tweak the EQ a little or add some delay to a particular sound. It’s up to you.

If all that isn’t enough, there’s a host of flexible tuning options for when you need them. The stretched, concert piano tuning is how a piano technician would tune the piano for concerts in order to achieve rich tonal chord textures across the entire range. The equal temperament tuning on the other hand is the standard western tuning scheme, best for when layering Pure Piano with other sounds like electric pianos, pads or strings. Also provided is the ability to transpose the piano up or down in either semi-tones or Hz for fine-tune adjustments.

Pure Piano is designed and developed by Hamburg-based e-instruments, renowned for their high-end digital recreations of acoustic instruments.

Very nice sounding instrument and devs that listen to their users!

** Updated & edited review, and revised star rating after e-instrument’s update adding CC7 reception and multichannel midi reception**

This is my first “real” iOS piano so I can’t compare it to the other heavyweights. I’m a long-time laptop musician used to multi-gig piano sample libraries like Native Instruments, now looking to lighten my load for some gigs that only need a piano. Overall I like this piano a lot and was very pleasantly surprised that I can play it at maximum polyphony with the smallest buffer on an iPad Air 2, an older iPad. I don’t expect it to be equal to what’s available for the Mac/Windows world. It has a nice tone and decent dynamic response although it lacks the extreme fff samples that one might want in certain situations when really digging in. Also, the sustain of the samples is a little short, imo - something more obvious if you’re playing a ballad solo; the notes don’t “ring & sing” like the piano library I’m used to on my Mac. Still, I’m very impressed with what I can do on an iOS device! I think I can be happy doing a gig with this piano.

Great app but a few details could be better.

Please give us a way of blocking CC and PC messages because every time I use this app it automatically starts moving parameters around if I play with some CCs or send some PCs. This is amazing, but only when you need it. A feature to disable this would be ideal since we can already automate exposed AUv3 parameters regardless.

Thank you!

Hi, Thanks for your review and comment. As a suggestion, have you checked to see if the "MIDI-Channels" setting is set to a specific channel such as channel 1 for example rather than being set to "All"? This will ensure that Pure Piano is not listening to information on all midi channels. This should solve the issue, but please let us know if you require any further assistance and we will be happy to help.

Desperately needs MIDI CC and Channel Assign capability

From a sound perspective I consider this the best acoustic piano emulation to date, for IOS. It offers a characteristic that many piano Apps do not. You can actually hear the hammer attack when striking the keys with greater velocity. That percussive aspect of the piano sound is truly lacking on many piano Apps. However, there are two very important aspects of this piano that are unacceptably missing. At the very least, this piano’s volume control must recognize MIDI CC #7, by default. And, you must be able to assign this piano to a specific MIDI channel of your choosing. Currently it sounds on all MIDI channels. Once those two issues are corrected, the piano can be further assessed. Without these two corrections this piano is completely unusable for live performance, while also using other Apps simultaneously.
