Description

A Math Puzzle game named one of the PAX 10 best indie games of the year! Non-Profit and educational with new levels by famous mathematicians Alex Bellos and James Grime

An evil calculator has its normal arithmetic operators replaced with sadistically obscure functions. Using logic and algebraic puzzle solving, you must work backwards to interpolate them and purge the calculator of its demons.

Non-profit and open-source, The Devil's Calculator is a highly original indie game that's as addicting as it is educational. Accessible to numberphiles and math novices alike, the first 20+ levels are 100% free to play and enjoy along with several DLC levels, authored by famous mathematicians like Alex Bellos, Grant Sanderson, James Grime, Tony Padilla and James Tanton! The game was named a fan favorite of GDWC, and one of the top 10 indie games of 2019 by PAX.

Each level has you decipher the function of a mysterious operator and use it to calculate the number of the beast to progress. Advanced graphing mechanics, countless features and simple, yet innovative level design provide considerable depth to the gameplay. Players unlock the ability to create their own levels and play challenges others have created - including free DLC levels crafted by the game's creators, educators and mathematicians. With hand drawn artwork and a charming story, the Devil's Calculator is a genuinely fun and gratifying puzzle experience. The game was celebrated at the MOVES conference by the National Museum of Mathematics in New York City.

Great game but…

Don’t get me wrong the game is great, it’s just that there’s unfortunately an exploit I accidentally discovered that allows you to bypass any level. It involves plugging in one attempt, then using the calculator function you get from holding the screen type in an equation that results in 666. Due to the game plugging the answer you get from the calculator function into the puzzle calculator and you had already previously typed out an attempt, the answer gets replaced with 666 allowing the player to click the equals sign and pass the level. Again this is a great game, and I wanted to bring this issue to the developer’s attention.

This game is the equivalent of learning the hard way

As someone whose never been very good at math, the puzzles in this game have forced me to learn a lot of new concepts. But the puzzles are designed in a way that compels you to learn. There is always a skip button, but I rarely feel inclined to use it, and instead, I try to learn the concept and beat the puzzles legitimately. It’s rare that I find a puzzle game related to math, that I really want to play and continue playing, but this is that puzzle game.

With 70 levels in the base game, and plenty more in the dlc, there are plenty of opportunities to learn.

5 stars on all fronts.

This can basically replace school tbh

Easily more fun, challenging, and educational than any math class I've been in. I'm getting ready to go back to school and this math game has been helping me a ton. The sheer joy of figuring out a pattern is just so good. And it forced me to look up math concepts I forgot about so now I remember factorials and base conversions...and some other stuff I may have never learned. Being able to buy a game outright with no ads or "energy" is also a real breath of fresh air. More games like this please.
