Works great as keyboard!

NOTE: I don't use this as a note taking app. This review is for Penquills used as a keyboard in other apps ONLY.

In order to use this app as a keyboard for other apps, just go to the Settings app, tap "General", tap "Keyboard", tap "Keyboards", and tap "Install new keyboard." Choose the language you want and it's installed. Tap "Penquills" right then and turn on full access so that the keyboard can access its recognition database (which is too big for the keyboard process and lives in the main app) and you're set.

I find I get best recognition by doing a bit of settings optimisation back in the main Penquills app. Tap the spanner (wrench) icon, then "Options", and Options again. I personally do best when Handwriting Recognition is set to Continuous Writing, and when I take the time to go through and set the Letter Shapes to match my handwriting.

The advantages of this app are that I can use it with any stylus, and I can also use the keyboard from its companion iPad app, "WritePad I", for a similar handwriting experience on both devices. I find the "continuous writing" option (in which I insert the current recognition and start a new one by writing over the first part of the line) to suit my way of working much better than just automatically recognising my handwriting and inserting it after a delay.

As a keyboard, it does have a limited choice of languages. The older version of Penquills had more, as does their iPad-only app, "WritePad I". Also, the handwriting keyboard options are buried and not easily found. It does need some setup effort that other English handwriting keyboards do not. But in all, I've been using it for years and I'm well satisfied.

Finally - Note to Text LIVE

After using many of the current note flagship apps, none of them had the simple, live, note-to-text interface I needed. Pen gesture commands are intuitive and simply brilliant. Well done.

I am using this for retention. As a student, I need to write in order to better absorb lessons. Penquills gives me the avenue to write just as in paper. It is not 100% accurate but of minimal concern. So far, so good.
